Turning to this week we have seven new release movies coming to an Odeon near you. We kick off with a film about a film, but not just any film, this film is one of the worst films of all time and there's a story behind it that has to be told; then we move to a devastating bush fire true story that claimed too many lives to save a remote community; then a prison crime drama of the lengths one man will go to on the inside to protect his family on the outside; before moving to a small town murder thriller which pulls the whole community into its web of intrigue. We then move to a drama offering telling the story of a young boy whose facial disfigurement does not stand in his way to overcoming the adversity and prejudice thrust upon him by his schoolmates and others; before wrapping up with a couple of Christmas offering - one a family oriented animated twist on the Christmas Nativity and the other inspired by a true story of how the modern Christmas came about courtesy of a classic book written by a famed wordsmith of some 170 years ago.

Whatever your taste in big screen film entertainment is this week - be it any of the seven latest release films as Previewed below, or those doing the rounds currently on general release and as Reviewed and Previewed in previous Blog Posts here at Odeon Online, you are here invited to share your movie going thoughts, opinions and observations by leaving your relevant, succinct and appropriate views in the Comments section below this or any other Post. We'd love to hear from you, and in the meantime, enjoy your big screen Odeon experience during the coming week.

'THE DISASTER ARTIST' (Rated M) - the now cult classic for all the wrong reasons, 'The Room' upon which this film is based, was released in 2003 and Written, Produced, Directed and starred Tommy Wiseau. At the time of its limited release it was panned by Critics for its bizarre and unconventional storytelling and various technical and narrative flaws, was described as 'the Citizen Kane of bad movies' and others have touted it as one of the worst films ever made. Originally labelled  as an independent romantic drama film, the movie found cult status subsequently and continues to be shown in limited screenings at select theatres to this day, with Wiseau retrospectively characterising the film as a black comedy, even though audiences have generally viewed it as a poorly-made drama, a viewpoint supported by some of the film's cast. In 2013 Greg Sestero, the films other principal Actor published a memoir titled 'The Disaster Artist : My Life Inside The Room, The Greatest Bad Film Ever Made' about the making of 'The Room' which has inspired this film.

And so James Franco Directs, Co-Produces and stars in this biographical comedy drama offering that stars him too as Tommy Wiseau, with his brother Dave Franco cast as Greg Sestero. Charting the meeting and early friendship between Wiseau and Sestero which occurred via acting classes in San Francisco, and Sestero's hopes and dreams of making it big in Hollywood which ultimately spurred him on to sign up for Wiseau's movie project 'The Room' - a film so bad it's good! Also starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Josh Hutcherson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Alison Brie, Jackie Weaver, Sharon Stone, Melanie Griffith, Zoey Deutch with celebrity cameo's from the likes of Bryan Cranston, Zach Braff, J.J. Abrams, Danny McBride, Judd Apatow, Keegan-Michael Key, Lizzy Caplan, Kristen Bell and others. The film is released in the US this week too, and unlike its subject matter film, this movie has received critical acclaim and most notably as has James Franco's performance. The film was shown at TIFF back in September and took out top prize at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

'ONLY THE BRAVE' (Rated M) - Directed by Joseph Kosinski whose previous Directing credits include 'Tron : Legacy' and 'Oblivion' here brings us the true story of action and drama based on the GQ Magazine article 'No Exit' written by Sean Flynn. Recreating the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots - a group within the Prescott, Arizona, Fire Department whose mission was to fight wild fires. Formed in 2002 as a fuels mitigation crew, it transitioned to a handcrew in 2004, and ultimately to a hotshot crew in 2008. The crew had their own fire station, where equipment was stored including two ten-man crew carriers. On June 30, 2013, nineteen firefighting crew members of the group were killed fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire. There were twenty members of the group, of which only one survived. According to the National Fire Protection Association, it was the greatest loss of life for firefighters in a wildfire since 1933, the deadliest wildfire of any kind since 1991, and the greatest loss of firefighters in the United States since the 9/11 attacks. This is their story, as played out by an ensemble cast taking in Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Taylor Kitsch, James Badge Dale, Jeff Bridges, Andie McDowell and Jennifer Connelly. The film cost US$38M to make, has so far grossed US$21M since its release Stateside in mid-October, and has received generally positive Reviews in particular for the cast, and the sensitivity with which the film maker handles the terrifying and emotional subject matter.

'SHOT CALLER' (Rated MA15+) - Written, Co-Produced and Directed by Ric Roman Waugh this crime thriller was released in the US in mid-August and has so far taken just US$3M despite its generally favourable Reviews and especially the praise bestowed upon the lead Actor Nicolaj Coster-Waldau. Here he plays Jacob 'Money' Harlon, a successful stockbroker, happily married with one child. When he runs a red light while under the influence of alcohol and accidentally kills his business partner, he is arrested and charged for vehicular manslaughter and jailed for thirty months. Inside prison he has to come to terms with the inmate hierarchy, and prove himself for the sake of his own protection and wellbeing. He does so, which gains him favour with the lead gang, but that favour comes at a price. As Harlon gradually integrates himself into prison society and the way of the gangs, he gets involved in a prison riot which lengthens his prison sentence fourfold. Serving out his time, upon his release he is coerced into orchestrating a major crime with a rival gang which doesn't end well for Harlon, resulting in him being imprisoned for life. Harlon, however took care of business on the outside and now on the inside too, from which at least his wife and child are safe from any repercussions. Also starring Jon Bernthal, Benjamin Bratt and Holt McCallany.

'SWEET VIRGINIA' (Rated MA15+) - this thriller is Directed by Jamie M. Dagg and was released in the US earlier this month, having Premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April this year. Here a former rodeo star and now motel manager Sam (Jon Bernthal), with a small time life, unknowingly starts an uneasy alliance with a young man, Elwood (Christopher Abbott) who checks into the motel and is responsible for a triple murder that has suddenly gripped this small Alaskan town. Every character from his loved ones to his motel patrons, plays a role in the unravelling of this community as the dangerous association forged by the two men sparks off a wave of violence and the re-emergence of Sam's innermost demons. Also starring Imogen Poots, Rosemarie DeWitt and Odessa Young.

'WONDER' (Rated PG) - this drama film based on the best selling and award winning 2012 novel of the same name by R.J. Palacio and is Directed by Stephen Chbosky whose prior Directing credits include 2012's 'The Perks of Bring a Wallflower'. Here the story centres around young August 'Auggie' Pullman (Jacob Tremblay) a fifth grade aged lad living with his parents in upper Manhattan. Jacob has an extremely rare medical facial deformity, which he refers to as 'mandibulofacial dysostosis', or more probably Treacher Collins Syndrome (a genetic disorder characterised by deformities of the ears, eyes, cheekbones, and chin) and a cleft palate. Having had 27 surgeries to improve his condition, Auggie had been home-schooled by his mother Isabel (Julia Roberts), but with his Dad Nate (Owen Wilson) his parents decide to enroll him in to Beecher Prep, a private school, for the start of middle school. As his new school mates, the local community, and his family all struggle to reveal their acceptance and compassion of Auggie, the young lads journey from zero to hero will unite them all in ways that no one ever thought possible. Also starring Izabela Vidovic as Olivia 'Via' Pullman, Auggie's older sister, and Mandy Patinkin as the school Principal Mr. Tushman. The film has garnered generally favourable Reviews and from its US$20M budget outlay has so far taken US$72M since its mid-November opening in the US.

'THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS' (Rated PG) - Directed by Bharat Nalluri, this Christmas drama offering is based on the 2008 book 'The Man Who Invented Christmas: How Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol Rescued His Career and Revived Our Holiday Spirits' by Les Stanford. It is October 1843 and Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) is down at heel because his last three books have all failed to find an audience. Outcast by his Publishers, he sets about penning and self publishing a book that he very much hopes will see the reversal of his fortunes and revive his flagging career. Over a six week period in which Charles Dickens was influenced by his own father John Dickens (Jonathan Pryce), he writes 'A Christmas Carol' in which he brings to life Ebenezer Scrooge (Christopher Plummer) and others whilst setting in motion the Christmas festive spirit that we know today. Also starring Simon Callow, Donald Sumpter, Bill Paterson and Miriam Margoyles. The film was released in the US last week and the UK this week too, has taken US2M at the Box Office so far and has generated positive press.

'THE STAR' (Rated G) - this CGI animated Christmas outing is Co-Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and is Directed by Timothy Reckart based on the Nativity of Jesus, with added animal input. Made for US$20M and so far having grossed US$24M, the film stars an ensemble voice cast but has received average Reviews at best. Here, a small yet plucky donkey named Bo (Steven Yuen) longs for a life beyond his daily grind at the village mill. One day he finds the courage to escape, and finally goes on the adventure of a lifetime. On his journey, he teams up with Ruth (Aidy Bryant), a loveable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave (Keegan-Michael Key), a dove with lofty aspirations. Together with three smartarse camels Felix, Cyrus and Deborah (Tracy Morgan, Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey respectively), and some eccentric stable animals, Bo and his new found friends follow The Star and become accidental heroes in the greatest story ever told - that of the first Christmas. Also starring the voices of Gina Rodriguez, Kelly Clarkson, Kristin Chenoweth, Mariah Carey, Kris Kristofferson, Ving Rhames and Christopher Plummer.

With seven new release films this week to tempt you out to your local Odeon, with the likes of a couple of festive season offerings - one of the family friendly animated kind and the other of the origins of a classic seasonal story that inspires the festive spirit; then an uplifting tale of a young lad with a facial disfiguration; followed by murky goings on in small town Alaska; a prison crime drama of the lengths a man will go to to protect his family on the outside; a true story of a wild fire and the tragic consequences upon those firemen caught up in it, and wrapping up with the story behind the greatest bad film ever made. Remember to share your movie going thoughts with your other like minded cinephiles afterwards here at Odeon Online, and meanwhile, I'll see you sometime somewhere in the week ahead at your local Odeon.

JUSTICE LEAGUE : Tuesday 21st November 2017.

'JUSTICE LEAGUE' which I saw earlier this week is here finally after all the hype, the media attention and the speculation surrounding this long awaited and eagerly anticipated fifth film in the DC Extended Universe following hot on the heels of 2013's 'Superman', 2016's 'Batman v. Superman : Dawn of Justice', and 'Suicide Squad', and 'Wonder Woman' earlier this year. Zack Snyder Directed 'Man of Steel' which grossed US$668M, and 'Batman v. Superman : Dawn of Justice' which grossed US$874M, with David Ayer Directing 'Suicide Squad' which grossed US$746M and Patty Jenkins on Director duty for 'Wonder Woman' which grossed US$822M. Once again Zack Snyder is back in the Directors chair for this collective Superhero offering featuring a cast of DC characters thrust together for the first time in a live action instalment, an ensemble cast and a price tag of US$300M to bring to the big screen, making 'Justice League' one of the most expensive films ever made. But, I guess on the strength that the first four films cost a combined US$800M and grossed a collective sum total of US$3.1B, then this fifth film should represent a sure bet for the numerous Production Companies involved. A sequel to this film was scheduled for a mid-2019 release date, which has subsequently been pushed back to make way for a stand alone 'Batman' film. At the time of publishing this Post, 'Justice League' had taken US$308M at the Box Office.

This story then follows on several months after the end of 'Batman v. Superman : Dawn of Justice' in which Batman/Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) who is now inspired by Superman's selfless act to sacrifice himself for the greater good of all humanity, teams up with new ally Wonder Woman/Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) to fend off a new threat, with the help of a few others yet to be recruited to the Team.

That threat comes in the form of Steppenwolf (voiced by Ciaran Hinds) - an alien high ranking military officer who is immortal and possesses superhuman strength, speed and stamina from the planet Apokolips, and who has a very specific mission on Earth that could have catastrophic consequences for our humble little green planet. He leads an army of winged flying Parademons who extend into their countless thousands, are fiercely loyal to their leader, have heightened strength and high pain tolerance, carry powerful weapons and resemble giant pesky flies only twice as ugly and much more menacing! Steppenwolf wants to capture three 'Mother Boxes' and combine their energy source into 'The Unity' to remake Earth into the hellish domain he can call home and rule over. Back in the day Steppenwolf and his legions of giant pesky flying armed creatures were thwarted by the combined forces of Olympian Gods, Amazons, Atlantians, Green Lanterns and humans, and the three all powerful Mother Boxes secreted away in various places of hiding around the world to lie dormant for thousands of years . . . . until now!

Following the death of Superman, the Mother Boxes are all triggered back into life which prompts Steppenwolf's return to Earth to retrieve them. The first such box is housed underground in Themyscira, the island home of Diana Prince, which he successfully overruns and escapes with his Parademons in tow. Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen) sends a warning to Diana Prince that Steppenwolf is on his way. This prompts Bruce and Diana to try and muster the support of other known metahumans Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) and Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) which Bruce goes in search of, and Victor Stone (Ray Fisher) which Diana searches out. They fail to convince both Curry and Stone to join their Team, but Allen is very enthusiastic and enlists immediately, giving the young lad some purpose in his otherwise meandering wasteful life. Stone joins the group after his father Silas (Joe Morton) is kidnapped by Steppenwolf searching out the Box left to the humans. Curry also joins too after Atlantis is attacked and the second Mother Box buried deep within the ocean is retrieved by Steppenwolf.

Commissioner James Gordon (J.K.Simmons) advises that he has learned that the Parademons are underground. Surmising that the only location is a long abandoned facility under Gotham Harbour, he advises Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash, now joined also by Cyborg and they converge on the facility and engage with Steppenwolf and his Parademons. In the ensuing close quarter fight, the walls of the facility are ruptured allowing torrents of water to flood into the underground chamber.  Aquaman comes to the rescue and holds back the water so allowing the others to escape.

Stone has been in possession of the third remaining Mother Box, as it was the energy from it that allowed his father Silas, to develop the power to rebuild his son into the Cyborg he is today. Batman hatches a plan to resurrect Superman using the same energy from the Mother Box. This would enable them to fight Steppenwolf on another level and overcome this formidable enemy, whilst at the same time restoring some hope in the world that all is not lost.

Reluctantly Prince and Curry agree although are not too happy with the prospect. Stone and Allen exhume Clark Kent's body and take it to the Kryptonian Ship with the Mother Box. Kent is laid in the incubation waters, and with Allen generating enough electricity they are able to bring Clark Kent back from the dead. However, Superman (Henry Cavill) is suffering from some memory loss and makes a sharp exit out of the ship and into a nearby park where he attacks The Flash, Cyborg who inadvertently tried to kill him, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Batman. With Superman as expected gaining the upper hand in any battle, things don't go so well for the group or the gathered Police. Until that is, Batman brings out his secret weapon - Lois Lane (Amy Adams), at which point his memories come flooding back. While the Team are distracted with all this in-fighting and Clark and Lois reconnecting, the third Mother Box is left unguarded and easy pickings for Steppenwolf, which he claims from right under their noses.

Cyborg tracks Steppenwolf and the heightened seismic activity from the three Mother Boxes now drawn together, to a remote Russian Village - the scene of a nuclear disaster some decades earlier and where a small enclave of people still reside. With Steppenwolf commencing The Unity, time is fast running out for the world as we know it. The Team of five make their way via the supersonic Bat Jet arriving with a plan to distract the Parademons while Cyborg sets about separating the three Boxes. The team of the remaining four are no match for Steppenwolf and his hordes of Parademons, who are unable to provide sufficient distraction to allow Cyborg to be effective. Until that is, Superman arrives and beats the crap out of Steppenwolf; saves the lives, with The Flash too, of multiple families trying to flee the conflagration; and helps Cyborg separate the Mother Boxes successfully so stripping Steppenwolf of his power. Seeing their leader overcome with fear, the Parademons descend on Steppenwolf just like flies on a freshly laid turd, and transport him instantly back to the world from whence they came.

In the closing scenes we see Alfred (Jeremy Irons) escorting Bruce and Diana to the burnt out shell of Wayne Manor. They agree to rebuild it as the centre of operations for the new Team, with room for future expansion as more metahumans join. The newly formed Team then all default to what they do best - Curry returns to his home of Atlantis; Stone works with his father on developing his cyborg technology and abilities; Prince take her place in the spotlight as a hero of truth and justice; Kent takes up his former role as Superman; and Allen gets an official job with the Police Department of Central City impressing his imprisoned father Henry Allen (Billy Crudup). Remain seated for the mid-credits sequence which sees The Flash race Superman to the Pacific coast, and the end credits scene in which Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) breaks out of Arkham Asylum with a new and deadly ally.

I enjoyed 'Justice League' perhaps more than most Critics who seem intent on bagging the Hell out of the DCEU in favour of the MCU. Sure this film is not perfect, and the MCU still has the upper hand in the Superhero stakes - both singularly and collectively, but this film is moving the DCEU in the right direction that's for sure. There is more levity in this film from the principal cast members which makes them more grounded, approachable and human; the action sequences are well executed; the storyline whilst a little thin is relatable; and in particular Ezra Miller, Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa steal the show, whilst Ben Affleck's Batman often looks bewildered and confused by all the going's on. After all he should be centre stage as the corner stone, the originator of the forming Justice League, but is sidelined by his colleagues who do (unlike him) possess real super powers - he's just super 'rich' after all! As an origin story for The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg there is just enough back story to set the scene (remembering that a standalone 'Aquaman' film has just wrapped production, and arrives in our cinemas in December 2018), but Steppenwolf as the big bad villain in the piece is very one dimensional and he just barks orders as his Parademons and beats up anyone or anything that gets in his way, until Superman arrives on the scene. The film is fun and fast paced, and holds promise for future DCEU instalments - I wish it well, and in giving those guys at the MCU a run for their money!

Over the coming week we have six new release films coming to an Odeon somewhere near you. We kick off with a couple of festive season offerings that couldn't be more different - one a sequel to a 2015 comedy hit that sees this pair of fathers joined by their fathers to give their kids a Christmas holiday experience they ain't get forget in a hurry, and a home invasion horror offering that sees a Christmas time babysitting shift turn nasty. We then tone down the pace with a biographical retelling of the origins of a hunny loving bear and his friends, that managed to wield its way into the hearts and minds of children of all ages the world over; then an Aussie drama of insects and plant life that sends a father and son into a tailspin over their feelings for a fun loving free spirited florist lady. We then move to a foreign language offering surrounding a Communist era teacher and the young charges she manipulates at school for her own gain; before wrapping up with a 17th Century period piece where love, art and gambling on the speculative tulip market collide.

Whatever your taste in big screen film entertainment is this week - be it any of the six latest release films as Previewed below, or those doing the rounds currently on general release and as Reviewed and Previewed in previous Blog Posts here at Odeon Online, you are here invited to share your movie going thoughts, opinions and observations by leaving your relevant, succinct and appropriate views in the Comments section below this or any other Post. We'd love to hear from you, and in the meantime, enjoy your big screen Odeon experience during the coming week.

'DADDY'S HOME 2' (Rated PG) - released just in time for Christmas 2015, 'Daddy's Home', Directed by Sean Anders, received generally mixed or average Reviews but grossed US$243M at the worldwide Box Office off the back of a US$69M production Budget. On this basis alone a sequel was almost inevitable, and here in time for Christmas 2017 is the follow up film, once again Directed by Sean Anders, for the same Budget outlay of US$69M and so far the film has grossed US$53M since going on release Stateside earlier this month, and has fared less well than its predecessor in terms of critical response.

Following on from the events of the first film, Brad Whitaker (Will Ferrell) and Dusty Mayron (Mark Wahlberg) are now the best of friends, and so they decide to join forces to give their children a Christmas they won't forget. However, their best laid plans soon get turned upside down when their own respective Dad's arrive for the holiday season - Don Whitaker (John Lithgow) and Kurt Mayron (Mel Gibson), and having to make alternative plans, they decide to take their kids to a luxury resort. Meanwhile, Dusty comes into conflict with his stepchild's biological father Roger (John Cena) all making for a rip roaring, laugh a minute, hilarity aplenty festive comedy sequel that is sure to fill your stocking . . . maybe! Also starring Linda Cardellini and Alessandra Ambrosio.

'GOODBYE CHRISTOPHER ROBIN' (Rated PG) - Directed by Simon Curtis, this historical British biographical drama film recounts the life of A.A. Milne, the creator of the Winnie-the-Pooh character and collection of beloved children's stories. A.A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) is fighting in the Battle of the Somme, during WWI. He returns home suffering from shell shock and suffers from visions of his battle experiences. With his wife Daphne (Margot Robbie), they have a son, which they name Christopher Robin Milne, and hire a Nanny Olive (Kelly Macdonald) as a live in full time carer for the young boy. Relocating to a country house with acreage, A.A. Milne wants to write an anti-War book, but when his wife retreats back home to London, and the Nanny has to go and visit her dying Mother, Milne Senior and Junior are left to fend for themselves. Taking long walks in the woodland estate on which the house stands, A.A. Milne starts to tell made up tales of his son's ever expanding collection of stuffed toy animals. These stories go on to form the cornerstone for 'Winnie-the-Pooh' and 'The House at Pooh Corner' published in 1926 and 1928 respectively. Milne and his family are quickly carried along by the overnight success of the books, while the captivating stories bring hope and comfort to the rest of postwar England. But for all this success, this is an underlying personal cost to father and son. Also starring Will Tilston as young Christopher Robin and Alex Lawther as the older Christoper Robin. The film was released in the UK at the end of September, and has so far taken US$6M at the Box Office.

'THE BUTTERFLY TREE' (Rated M) - Written and Directed by Priscilla Cameron in her feature film debut, this Australian drama film Premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival earlier this year and was also screened at TIFF in September. The film here tells the story of early teenager Fin (Ed Oxenbould) who meets Evelyn (Melissa George), a former Burlesque Queen and now a florist with a liking for 1940's era fashion and a zest for life. Fin is attracted into her mysterious world of plants and insects, that seems to be the perfect antidote to his continuing grief over the death of his mother. But as Fin’s emotions for Evelyn blossom into a muddled mix of teenage desire and misplaced maternal love, it sets the scene for a showdown with his equally struggling father, Al (Ewen Leslie) especially when it become apparent that Al is also falling for Evelyn. The performances of the principal cast and the stunning visual imagery have been praised in particular, over the well trodden storyline.

'THE TEACHER' (Rated M) - this Slovak and Czech co-produced drama film Premiered at the July 2016 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and has done the international film festival circuit ever since (including Sydney and Brisbane), and now goes on a limited release in Australia this week.  Set in 1983, Maria Drazdechova arrives as a teacher at a suburban school near Bratislava. She quickly settles in and begins blackmailing the parents of her students to gain benefits from them, and those that decline see their sons and daughters receiving poor grades for their work and bullied at school. The school Headmaster is reluctant to intervene because Miss Drazdechova is the Chairperson of the local Communist Party, but when one of her students attempts suicide, the Headmaster is compelled to petition the parents for her removal. Some parents agree to sign, but not many, whilst the silent majority are afraid of Drazdechova's connections and therefore refuse to comply with the wishes of the Headmaster. Ultimately, will they stand up for what they believe in and the wellbeing of their children and accept the risk that goes with it, or will they remain silent and let things run its course? Directed by Jan Hrebejk, and starring Zuzana Maurery in the lead role as the antagonistic Maria Drazdechova, for which she was won several awards for her performance.

'TULIP FEVER' (Rated MA15+) - here we have a historical period piece that was due to go into production first off way back in 2004, but the shoot was halted literally days before filming commenced due to tax law changes impacting film production in the UK. Fast forward to 2013 and Justin Chadwick was assigned to Direct, and from there the principle cast was announced and filming commenced sometime in 2015 with the first images released at that years Cannes Film Festival. Written by acclaimed British playwright and screenwriter Tom Stoppard, the film is set in Holland in the 17th Century during the 'tulip mania' period during which contract prices for some bulbs of the recently introduced and fashionable tulip reached extraordinarily high levels. The film charts the story of an Amsterdam artist Jan van Loos (Dane DeHaan) who is commissioned by Cornelis Sandvoort (Christoph Waltz) to paint a portrait of his beautiful young wife Sophia Sandvoort (Alicia Vikander). The artist and his subject fall for each other and subsequently decide to invest in the speculative tulip market in the hope of making their fortune and forging a future together. Also starring Judi Dench, Holliday Grainger, Cara Delevingne, Tom Hollander, Jack O'Connell and Zach Galifianakis, the film Premiered in London in mid-August, was released in the US in early September, cost US$25M to make, has so far grossed just US$8M and has received lacklustre Reviews generally.

'BETTER WATCH OUT' (Rated MA15+) - this Australian and American co-production is touted as a festive season comedy horror offering, and is Directed and Co-Written by Chris Peckover. Set in the supposedly quiet and peaceful suburbs during the Christmas holiday period, we find Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) on baby sitting duty at the Lerner household for twelve year old Luke (Levi Miller), while Mum Deandra (Virginia Madsen) and Dad Robert (Patrick Warburton) are out for the evening. Expecting this to be a straightforward night and therefore easy money, the evening takes on more deadly implications when a group of intruders break into the home and set about terrorising the babysitter and her young charge. Defending the young Luke to the best of her ability, Ashley soon realises that this is no ordinary home invasion. Also starring Ed Oxenbould.

With six new release films this week to tempt you out to your local Odeon, with the likes of a couple of festive season howlers - one of the comedic sequel kind and the other of the horror home invasion kind; then a historical biopic of a hunny loving bear and his friends; then a drama offering as father and son compete for the affections of bohemian florist; followed by a Slovak foreign language film of teacher up to no good deeds in a 1980's school in a Communist regime; before wrapping up with a period piece set amidst the Dutch tulip fever period. Remember to share your movie going thoughts with your other like minded cinephiles afterwards here at Odeon Online, and meanwhile, I'll see you sometime somewhere in the week ahead at your local Odeon.

Adam Douglas Driver was born in Fontana, San Bernardino County, California, USA to mother Nancy Needham, a paralegal, and father Joe Douglas Driver. His stepfather, Rodney Wright, is a Baptist Church Minister. When the young Adam was seven years of age, he moved with his mother and older sister to Mishawaka, Indiana where he was raised and attended the local Mishawaka High School. He sang in the local Church choir as a young lad, but also got up to all manner of antics as a teenager including scaling tall radio towers, setting objects alight, and forming a fight club. Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he joined the military service enlisting in the US Marine Corps, where he served for thirty two months as an 81mm mortar man, before being medically discharged as a result of a mountain biking accident during which he broke his sternum. Because of this he never saw active duty. After his discharge, he attended the University of Indianapolis for a year and then moved to The Juilliard School in New York City to study drama, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 2009.

After graduating, Driver began acting in stage plays in both Broadway and off-Broadway productions, during which time he also appeared in a number of television shows, made for television movies and short films, including 'The Unusuals', 'Law & Order', 'You Don't Know Jack', and 'The Wonderful Maladys'. His feature film debut came in the Clint Eastwood Directed, 'J. Edgar' in 2011. In 2012 Driver was cast as the lead character's unstable boyfriend Adam Sackler in the HBO comedy drama TV series 'Girls', in which he has appeared in 49 episodes across six seasons, with the final season wrapping up in April of this year. For the part he played, Driver was nominated three times for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

In 2012 Driver appeared in the Romantic Comedy Drama 'Gayby', in the drama 'Not Waving But Drowning', and the in two critically lauded films of that same year - Steven Spielberg's 'Lincoln' with an all star cast including Daniel Day Lewis as the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, and Noah Baumbach's 'Frances Ha' opposite Greta Gerwig in the title role.

2013 kicked off with short film 'The River', then drama 'Bluebird', followed by the Coen Brothers Written and Directed 'Inside Llewyn Davis' with Oscar Isaac in the title role and also starring Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman and Garrett Hedlund. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, three BAFTA's, and one AACTA amongst its total haul of 47 wins and 171 nominations. The adventure BioPic of Robyn Davidson's trek across the Western Australian desert with four camels and her trusted dog in tow, 'Tracks' came next with Mia Wasikowska playing adventurer Robyn, and Driver as the National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan charting her epic journey. 'What If' closed out 2013 with Daniel Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan, and Rafe Spall.

Drama thriller 'Hungry Hearts' opened 2014 and then another outing with Writer and Director Noah Baumbach in 'While We're Young' opposite Naomi Watts, Ben Stiller and Amanda Seyfried. Shawn Levy's comedy drama of a dysfunctional family 'This Is Where I Leave You' with Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Jane Fonda, Rose Byrne, Corey Stoll and Timothy Olyphant saw out the year.

2015 saw an episode on 'The Simpson's' followed up by his critically praised role as Kylo Ren - the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, trained in the ways of the Jedi by his Uncle Luke Skywalker, and tempted over to the Dark Side by Supreme Leader Snoke, aspiring ultimately to be as powerful and fearless as his Grandfather Darth Vader, in the epic 'Star Wars : The Force Awakens' - Episode VII in the hugely popular, long running franchise. The film made $2.07B at the global Box Office making it the third highest grossing film of all time, and picked up a swag of awards including five Academy Award nominations, three BAFTA nods and one win amongst a total 57 wins and 128 nominations. Driver reprises his Kylo Ren character in the soon to be released Episode VIII - 'Star Wars : The Last Jedi' and the yet to be titled Episode IX due in late 2019.

2016 saw three new film offerings beginning with the excellent 'Midnight Special' for Writer and Director Jeff Nichols and also starring Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Sam Shepard, Jaeden Lieberher and Kirsten Dunst. This was followed up by The Directed and Co-Written Jim Jarmusch film 'Paterson' and next the Martin Scorsese Directed and Co-Written 17th Century historical adventure drama 'Silence' opposite Andrew Garfield, Liam Neeson and Ciaran Hinds. The film was nominated for the Best Cinematography Academy Award amongst its collection of six wins and 48 further nominations.

This year saw the release of another Written and Directed Noah Baumbach offering with the comedy drama 'The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)' also starring Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Dustin Hoffman, Candice Bergen, Sigourney Weaver, Emma Thompson and Grace Van Patten. This was followed up by Steven Soderbergh's North Carolina NASCAR heist comedy crime drama 'Logan Lucky' starring alonsgside Daniel Craig, Channing Tatum, Katie Holmes and Riley Keough.

Next up for Driver is the aforementioned 'Star Wars - Episode VIII : The Last Jedi' due for release in December this year and eagerly awaited by legions of loyal fans worldwide. Currently filming for a later 2018 release is the biographical true crime drama 'Black Klansman' for Writer and Director Spike Lee, about an African American police officer who rises through the ranks of his local Ku Klux Klan chapter. In Post-Production is Terry Gilliam's on again off again passion project 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote' also starring Olga Kurylenko, Stellan Skarsgard and Jonathan Pryce and also due in 2018. In Pre-Production is 'Annette' a drama musical for Director Leos Carax with Michelle Williams about a stand up comic whose opera singing wife has died leaving him to care for their two years old daughter, whom he discovers has a surprising talent. And finally, and recently announced is the Sylvester Stallone Directed and starring biographical drama 'Tough as They Come' about an American soldier in Afghanistan who loses both arms and and legs four days short of his 25th birthday, and the effects this has on his life when he returns home with four prosthetic limbs.

All up Driver has thirty-six Acting credits to his name, and he has garnered ten award wins and 29 nominations from around the circuit including three Primetime Emmy Award nods for 'Girls'. He has been in a steady relationship with his 'Gayby' Co-Star Joanne Tucker since mid-2013. He also founded 'Arts In The Armed Forces' (AITAF) - a not-for-profit organisation that stages theatre productions across all branches of the military service both in the US and overseas.

Adam Driver - joined the Marines because he was not doing anything honourable with his life; has been described by one Critic as being 'an understated star with a great, non-movie star face'; refuses to watch himself on screen, or listen to himself in radio interviews; is terrified of not having somewhere to put his voice; admits to having a really big face and is therefore in no danger of securing leading man roles; but despite these misgivings has created quite a following in just a few short years, is increasingly in demand, and is carving out a successful career in spite of himself. Keep it up Adam, and Happy Birthday to you from Odeon Online.
