Spanning six weeks on the road, the film captures Cleese unfiltered and on the move - riffing on life, fame, and the absurdity of getting old in front of thousands of fans. As he reflects on a stage career that began in 1963, the question lingers - is this the end of the road? With unique and intimate access and showing unexpected tenderness, this is a documentary about legacy, laughter, and the dignity of bowing out, however reluctantly.

'MISTRESS DISPELLER' (Rated PG) - is an American Chinese Documentary film that is Co-Produced, photographed and Directed by Elizabeth Lo, who also helmed the doco 'Stray' in 2020. Here, for the innovative service providers of China’s booming romance economy, infidelity presents just another business opportunity. In no time, Wang ingratiates herself with Mr Li and the young Fei Fei in search of any fissures that could drive them apart. Far from being a cheap chronicle of messy infidelity, however, what emerges is an empathetic study of individuals trying their best to heed what their hearts are telling them. The film saw its World Premiere screening at the Venice International Film Festival in early September 2024, was released in the USA towards the end of October this year, and now gets a limited release here in Australia, has so far grossed US$70K and has garnered widespread critical acclaim.

'ZOOTOPIA 2' (Rated PG) - this American animated buddy cop comedy film is produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and is Written by Jared Bush and is also Directed by him and Byron Howard. It is the sequel to 2016's 'Zootopia' which grossed US$1.03B off the back of a US$150M production budget. To solve the case while contending with the Zootopia Police Department and other parties, they must go undercover to new parts of town, testing their partnership while dealing with a conspiracy regarding the other reptiles near Zootopia. Also starring the voice talents of Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Shakira, Patrick Warburton, Macaulay Culkin, Jean Reno, Danny Trejo, John Leguizamo, Alan Tudyk, Josh Gad, June Squibb, Michael J. GLASS ONION : A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY - Tuesday 29th November 2022.

I saw the M rated 'GLASS ONION : A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY' on its final day of its very limited theatrical run earlier this week. This American murder mystery film is Written, Co-Produced and Directed by Rian Johnson whose previous film making credits take in his big screen debut with 'Brick' in 2005, then 'The Brothers Bloom' in 2008, 'Looper' in 2012, 'Star Wars : Episode VIII - The Last Jedi' in 2017 and 'Knives Out' in 2019, to which this film is a standalone sequel. This film had its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in mid-September this year and is scheduled to have a one-week limited theatrical release from 23rd November before its streaming release on 23rd December by Netflix. The film saw the widest theatrical release ever for a Netflix film generating US$15M in Box Office receipts towards its production costs of US$40M and garnering universal critical acclaim.

During the height of the 2020 COVID pandemic when the world is gripped by lockdowns, we are introduced to a group of individuals who all receive a large and strange looking wooden box, with no visible means of gaining entry to it. There is Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jnr.), the head scientist for global tech company Alpha Industries; Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson), a former supermodel turned fashion designer; Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), the governor of Connecticut now running for the Senate; Duke Cody (Dave Bautista), a Twitch streamer and men's rights activist; and Cassandra 'Andi' Brand (Janelle Monae), Miles's ex-business partner. Lionel hooks up with the other recipients of the same identical box (for they are all close friends of one another) and together they are able to gain entry into the box revealing an elaborate number of puzzles and games contained therein, with the final reveal being an invitation from billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) and owner of Alpha Industries to attend his very own murder mystery weekend at his private estate 'Glass Onion' which is housed on his own private Greek island. Tagging along are also Peg (Jessica Henwick) Birdie's Assistant, and Whiskey (Madelyn Cline) Duke's girlfriend and Twitch channel Assistant.

World renowned Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is hired by Andi's identical twin sister, Helen, to investigate her sister's alleged suicide the previous week. Helen advises Blanc that Miles jettisoned Andi from her role as CEO of Alpha Industries after Andi categorically denied his request to release 'Klear', a  hydrogen-based alternative fuel that early tests have proven to be very dangerous under certain conditions. She lost a lawsuit against him due to her inability to prove that she conceived of the company and not Miles. Helen suspects that one of Miles's friends killed Andi after she found a cocktail napkin from the 'Glass Onion' bar that they all used to frequent back in the day, on which she scribbled Alpha's founding ideas, evidence that would discredit Miles.

Blanc instructs Helen to take Andi's place for the weekend given that they were identical twins and news of Andi's death has still not hit the headlines. Arriving on the island to help him investigate undercover as though they are unknown to each other, Miles informs Blanc that he did not send him an invitation but allows him to stay, assuming that his presence was a joke arranged by one of the other guests.

On the island, Helen sets about covertly searching for clues that could potentially lead to Andi's killer, but determines that Lionel, Claire, Birdie, and Duke are all suspects. Lionel and Claire had staked their professional reputations to support Klear, only to learn of its dangerous qualities afterward; Birdie was forced by Miles to take responsibility for hiring a sweatshop in Bangladesh to manufacture her clothing line; and Duke was attempting to coerce Miles into giving him a position at Alpha News by using Whiskey to seduce him.

On the first evening with the weekend ahead of them, Miles lays out plans for his elaborate staged murder mystery in which he is the victim and his guests need to prove who the killer is. But Blanc, before the game has even started, solves the case much to Miles' frustration saying that he even had Gillian Flynn write his murder mystery game, and she doesn't come cheap!

So the group parties with a number of guests considering returning home the next day. Duke suddenly collapses dead after inadvertently drinking from Miles's glass. The group begins to panic, suspecting the missing 'Andi' to be the killer and discovering that Duke's pistol (which he never goes anywhere without) is missing. Then at 10:00pm right on cue, all the lights across the island go out except for the lighthouse which intermittently illuminates the house and grounds. In the resulting chaos, the group splits up. Blanc bumps into Helen outside on the steps, who has been searching for Andi's cocktail napkin which she believes the killer stole. He instructs her to search Miles's office. An unknown assailant shoots Helen in the chest, but she survives unknown to anyone else but Blanc, due to Andi's diary in her jacket pocket having blocked the bullet.

Blanc rounds up the remaining group in Miles's art room, where he deduces that Miles committed both murders. After Miles learned of the napkin's existence from Lionel, he had killed Andi to prevent her from revealing it to the public. Immediately following her murder, he was seen speeding away from her house by Duke who was nearly 'pancaked' on his motorcycle, and who deduced Miles's involvement with Andi's death during the party, when his newsfeed revealed her death, and as a consequence he attempted to blackmail Miles. This then prompted Miles to poison Duke with pineapple juice, which Duke was severly allergic to, before using Duke's pistol to shoot Helen.

Helen finds the napkin in Miles's office and reveals her true identity to the group, but Miles burns the napkin with his cigar lighter as she is holding it. With no evidence against Miles and the group unwilling to side with her, Helen sets about smashing all of Miles's glass sculptures before triggering the Klear-powered mansion to explode. This destroys the Glass Onion and the Mona Lisa, which Miles had on loan from the Louvre, while it was shut due to the pandemic. With Miles's reputation now in tatters due to the worlds most famous painting's being destroyed and Klear being proven as dangerous, the group decides they will testify against him. Helen and Blanc sit on the beach as they watch the Police arrive by boat as the sun rises.

'Glass Onion : A Knives Out Mystery'
is very entertaining and I'm pleased to have seen it on the big screen at my local independent movie theatre (which was packed out I might add) rather than waiting for the small screen Netflix release at Christmas. The film shines in almost every aspect from the sun drenched Greek island setting, to all the trappings of a very wealthy tech billionaire, to the performances of the cast to the script, the humour and the direction laid on by Rian Johnson, it hardly misses a beat. This is more than a worthy follow-up to 2019's 'Knives Out' and with double the budget it is clear that no expense was spared in bringing together an ensemble cast lead by the returning Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, and the exotic location that undoubtedly contributed to the film being greater than the sum of its parts and a real crowd pleaser to boot. Also starring in cameo appearances Ethan Hawke, Angela Lansbury, Hugh Grant, Natasha Lyonne, Serena Williams and Stephen Sondheim, amongst a handful of others.

'Glass Onion : A Knives Out Mystery' merits four claps of the Odeon Online clapperboard from a possible five claps.

KNIVES OUT : Monday 2nd December 2019

Here with a change of pace and genre compared to his last mega budget space opera epic that was 2017's 'Star Wars : The Last Jedi', Rian Johnson here writes, Directs and Co-Produces this M Rated throw back to the murder mystery whodunit's of yesteryear with 'KNIVES OUT', which I saw at my local multiplex earlier this week. Aside from the aforementioned 'Star Wars' instalment, Johnson has also Directed and Written 'Brick' (his big screen debut in 2005), then 'The Brothers Bloom', 'Looper' and helmed several episodes of 'Breaking Bad' in between. In wanting to craft an Agatha Christie inspired type film, Johnson sought the influences from such classic comedic murder mystery crime stories as 'Murder on the Orient Express', 'Murder by Death', 'Death on the Nile', 'The Mirror Crack'd', 'Evil Under the Sun', 'Deathtrap' and 'Clue'. With a budget of US$40M, the film saw its World Premier at TIFF in early September, went on general release last week, has so far grossed US$76M and has generated widespread Critical acclaim.

And so, here we have renowned and wealthy crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) who invites his extended dysfunctional family to his remote mansion on his 85th birthday in hopes of reuniting them all. However, the morning after the birthday party, Harlan is found dead by Harlan's housekeeper - the loyal Fran (Edie Patterson), with his throat slit, and the knife still in his hand - allegedly suicide.

A few days later, following the funeral, an anonymous figure has hired a successful and well regarded private detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) to support the local Police Dept. consisting of Detective Lieutenant Elliot (Lakeith Stanfield) and Trooper Wagner (Noah Segan) in their investigations. Elliot and Wagner begin questioning the individual members of the family unit who were all present in the house the night before for the birthday celebrations, with Blanc looking on, observing and taking mental notes.

They start with Linda Drysdale (Jamie Lee Curtis) Harlan's eldest daughter and a real estate guru who runs her own company, and according to her a self made woman, even though she started with a $1M loan from her father. They then move to Richard Drysdale (Don Johnson) Harlan's son-in-law and Linda's husband, who helps run his wife's company. We learn early on that Harlan had photographic evidence of Richard in a compromising position with another woman, and how Harlan had intended to expose his infidelity to Linda the next day. In discussion with the Detectives Richard puts another spin on this tale entirely.

We then move to Walt Thrombey (Michael Shannon), Harlan's youngest son, and the acting CEO of his Dad's publishing company. Walt had always wanted to sell the film and television rights to Harlan's extensive back catalogue of publications, but Harlan had always intervened and strictly forbidden it. At the party, Harlan effectively fires Walt from his position at the publishing company, saying that it is time for him to go his own way in life and find the niche with which to make his own fortune - much to Walt's chagrin.

Then there is Joni Thrombey (Toni Collette), Harlans daughter-in-law and the wife of Harlan's deceased son Neil (who died fifteen years previously). She is a lifestyle guru and influencer and mother to Meg (Katherine Langford) who studies at a liberal arts college funded by Harlan to the tune of $100K a year. Harlan has discovered that Joni was double dipping the money meant for his granddaughter's tuition over the last four years, amounting to $400K, and as such cuts off her allowance. Needless to see when questioned, Joni also puts a different spin on this conversation.

And then there is Hugh Ransom Drysdale (Chris Evans) - the adult son of Linda and Richard, who is a rebellious spoiled and lazy playboy - although Harlan has a soft spot for Ransom, and sees himself in the young man. Ransom is the only member of the family who did not attend the funeral, but was overheard arguing with Harlan the night of his birthday party by Jacob Thrombey (Jaeden Martell) Harlan's teenage grandson, Walt and Donna's son, who holds alternative rightwing opinions and is constantly on the Internet on his phone.

On the periphery sits Wanetta 'Great Nana' Thrombey (K. Callan), Harlan's 100+year old mother who sits silently observing, taking it all in, and Donna Thrombey (Riki Lindhome) - Harlan's daughter-in-law and Walt's wife.

Finally, there is Marta Cabrera (Ana de Armas) - Harlan's private nurse and caretaker who was the closest to him, more so than any other member of his family. She is living with her mother and are migrants from a South American country. Marta is very well regarded by the other family members who all see her as part of the Thrombey family for her deep heartfelt care and compassion shown everyday day towards Harlan. Blanc has come to learn that Marta's good conscience means she cannot lie without vomiting, and so trusting that she will tell the truth, Blanc asks her to accompany him in his investigations. They search the property and its grounds for clues.

Over the next couple of days, the whole family gathers for the reading of the Will. They are all expecting to become rich beneficiaries of Harlan's estate which consisted of the grand house they are all presently sat in, a holiday home, and $60M in cash. When Alan Stevens (Frank Oz), Harlan's lawyer arrives to read the Will, the family are shocked to hear that he left everything to Marta. The whole family almost in unison turn on her immediately, all expect for Ransom, who make his exit laughing. The other Thrombeys realise that, under the slayer rule (preventing a person inheriting property from a person he or she murders) they will regain their inheritance if they can prove Marta killed Harlan, and insist Blanc continue the investigation, suspecting that she had ulterior motives.

And so Blanc does continue with his investigation, piecing together the puzzle that leads him down the path of toxicology reports, another attempted murder, a torched medical examiners office, a car chase, and foul play where everyone is a suspect. But Blancs investigative work is closing in on the prime suspect who is suspected of being Marta right up until just before the end, but the toxicology report proves otherwise, revealing another suspect amongst the family ranks who had the motive and the opportunity. To reveal anymore would be giving the game away. Needless to say, in the final analysis, the money grabbing Thrombey clan all get their comeuppance and vacate their former family home having inherited less than a brass razoo, whilst seeing one of their own carted off for murder and attempted murder.

'Knives Out' is an honest to goodness throwback to those cliched whodunit films of yesteryear but dusted off, shaped up, polished and brought beautifully up to date with a fine cast, a cracking storyline, top notch production values, social and cultural commentary, and enough malice, twists and turns to satisfy the appetite of any die hard genre fan. Daniel Craig shines with his deep southern drawl and his old school methods of deduction, Ana de Armas is compelling as the kind hearted good natured caring nurse thrust into the limelight for all the wrong reasons, Chris Evans fresh from his turn as Captain America hams it up as the devilish young buck and looks to be having a blast, and Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Don Johnson and Michael Shannon all add depth in their roles for the limited screen time they enjoy. This modern murder mystery tinged with black humour is smart, stylish, witty, very entertaining and very well made and I think you'll be hard pressed to not enjoy this cinematic treat. Let's hope this isn't the last we've seen of Benoit Blanc, and Rian Johnson's love letter to the whodunit genre.

'Knives Out' warrants four claps of the Odeon Online clapperboard, from a potential five.
