Ryan Thomas Gosling was born in London, Ontario, Canada to mother Donna, a Secretary and father Thomas Ray Gosling, who worked in sales for a paper mill. Because of his father's transient work in sales, the family relocated several times always staying in Ontario, and living in Cornwall and Burlington. He was educated at Gladstone Public School, then Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School and then the Lester B. Pearson High School in Burlington. He remembers hating his childhood. He was bullied at school and claims he had no friends until his early teenage years. He was suspended from school for throwing steak knives at other children, was unable to read, diagnosed with ADHD and a s a result was homeschooled by his mother for a year. Gosling performed in front of a live audience from an early age - singing with his older sister Mandi, at weddings and in his Uncle's Elvis Presley tribute act. He was also involved with a local ballet company. He says that performing boosted his confidence and was the only thing that he ever received any praise for. His parents divorced when the young Ryan was thirteen years of age, and he and Mandi lived with their mother. He dropped out of High School at age seventeen to concentrate his efforts on forging an Acting career. 

At the age of twelve Gosling auditioned for the Disney Channel's 'Mickey Mouse Club'. He was successful, out of 17,000 other young hopefuls, and was given a two year contract as a 'Mouseketeer', and as a result relocated to Orlando, Florida. His fellow cast crew included Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears, and he became good friends with Timberlake in particular. He says that this two years were the greatest of his life. Following the cancellation of the show in 1995, Gosling returned to Canada and secured television appearances on 'Are You Afraid of the Dark', 'Kung Fu : The Legend Continues', 'Goosebumps', 'Flash Forward', and in forty four episodes of 'Breaker High', and at age eighteen he moved to New Zealand to film the action adventure series 'Young Hercules' as the lead character which ran for fifty episodes between 1998 and 1999. Thereafter, the young Actor wanted to turn his attention to more serious roles offering greater variety, so he decided to move away from television and concentrate on feature films.

At the age of nineteen, Gosling secured a supporting role in the American football drama 'Remember The Titans' and thereafter his first lead role in 'The Believer' in 2001 - a semi-autobiographical drama film about a young Jewish lad who becomes a Neo-Nazi. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and much praise was bestowed upon Gosling's performance although the film recouped barely one-third of its US$1.5M production budget. This led to 2002's psychological thriller with Sandra Bullock in 'Murder by Numbers' and later that year 'The Slaughter Rule' with David Morse. Whilst the latter film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance again, the film had a limited release and made less that US$15K from its US$500K or so Budget cost. The following year, Gosling played in 'The United States of Leland' with Don Cheadle, Kevin Spacey and Chris Klein about a teenage boy who murders an intellectually disabled boy and the aftermath on both families. The film only received a US release and as such made US$344K only.

Gosling really hit the mainstream with 2004's romantic drama film 'The Notebook' Directed by Nick Cassavetes and co-starring Rachel McAdams. Set during the 1940's the film tells the story of a couple who fall in love, told from the present day in flash back, by Gosling's older self portrayed by James Garner. The film garnered several award wins and nominations, made US$116M from its US$29M Budget, and has appeared on numerous Most Romantic Movies lists. 2005 saw Psychological thriller 'Stay' with Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor and Bob Hoskins which was a Box Office bomb and garnered mixed Reviews at best. 'Half Nelson' followed in 2006 with Anthony Mackie, as did 'Fracture' with Anthony Hopkins, and then 'Lars and the Real Girl' seeing out the decade.

After an absence from movie making of three years, Gosling reappeared re-energised and reinvigorated in 2010 to conquer the world. 2010 launched with Derek Cianfrance's Directorial debut with 'Blue Valentine' with Michelle Williams, then crime drama 'All Good Things' opposite Kirsten Dunst and then the highly acclaimed crime drama 'Drive' Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and also starring Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Oscar Isaacs, Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman and Christina Hendricks. The film picked up 77 award wins and another 171 nominations including one Oscar, one Golden Globe and four BAFTA nods. Also in 2011 was 'Crazy Stupid Love' with Steve Carell, Kevin Bacon, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone and Marisa Tomei, followed by political drama thriller Directed, Co-Written and starring George Clooney 'The Ides of March' which also starred Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Wright, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood and Max Minghella. The film garnered nine award wins and another 35 nominations including one Academy Award, four Golden Globe and two BAFTA nominations.

2012 saw another outing for Writer/Director Derek Cianfrance with crime drama 'The Place Beyond the Pines' with Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes and Ben Mendelsohn about a motorcycle stunt driver who turns to bank robbery as a means to provide for his girlfriend and their new child. The next year brought 1949 LA set action crime drama 'Gangster Squad' with Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone playing the love interest to Gosling's LAPD officer who attempts to outwit mob boss Mickey Cohen. This in turn led to another role in a Nicolas Winding Refn Written and Directed crime drama 'Only God Forgives' with Kristen Scott Thomas.

'The Big Short' followed in 2015. This biographical drama comedy about the mid-2000's financial melt-down and the bursting of the housing bubble was Directed by Adam McKay and Co-starred Steve Carell, Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Rafe Spall and Hamish Linklater and was highly regarded by Critics and audiences alike, raking in an Academy Award and BAFTA win for Best Adapted Screenplay as well as four other Academy Award nominations, four Golden Globe nods and four BAFTA nods too amongst its total haul of 37 wins and 79 nominations. The film made US$134M off its US$50M budget investment. Shane Black's Co-Written and Directed mid '70's neo-noir action comedy offering teamed up Gosling with Russell Crowe in 'The Nice Guys' receiving generally positive Reviews, and this led of course to Damien Chazelle's hugely successful and popular 'La La Land' opposite Emma Stone. This film returned US$446M at the Box Office from its US$30M Budget outlay and won six Academy Awards and was nominated for a further eight, won seven Golden Globes, and won five BAFTA's and was nominated a further six times amongst its total collection of 214 wins and 249 other nominations.

Terrence Malick's Austin set music scene drama romance offering 'Song to Song' had a long gestation period to make it to our screens and a limited release just recently and also starred Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Holly Hunter and Val Kilmer. Also just recently released is the sequel thirty five years in the making, 'Blade Runner 2049' Directed by Denis Villeneuve with Gosling playing 'K' alongside Harrison Ford's reprised character Rick Deckard from the cult classic 1982 Ridley Scott Directed film, 'Blade Runner'. The film remains on general release and has so far grossed US241M against its US$150M Budget, and also stars Jared Leto, Dave Bautista, Robin Wright, Lennie James, Barkhad Abdi and Edward James Olmos also from the original film.

Next up Gosling is starring in the Damien Chazelle Directed vehicle 'First Man' based on the biography 'First Man : The Life of Neil A. Armstrong' with the Actor portraying the first man on the Moon, Neil Armstrong. Also starring Claire Foy, Jon Bernthal, Jason Clarke, Corey Stoll and Kyle Chandler, the film is scheduled for release in October 2018.

Aside form his Acting interest, Gosling also Wrote, Produced and Directed 'Lost River' in 2014 - his debut, in this mystery fantasy drama offering starring Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Matt Smith, Ben Mendelsohn and Eva Mendes. The film Premiered in the Un Certain Regard category at the Cannes Film Festival, and received a limited release in early 2015 making just US$615K at the Box Office and receiving mixed Reviews. Gosling also formed the indie rock band 'Dead Man's Bones' in 2007 with his friend Zach Shields. They released a self titled album in late 2009 on which Gosling contributed vocals, and played piano, bass guitar, guitar and cello on the recording. They subsequently played in several music festivals and toured briefly to promote the album in late 2009.

All up, Gosling has 43 Acting credits to his name, six as Producer, one as Writer and one as Director, and he has eleven Soundtrack credits too. He has been nominated for two Academy Awards for 'La La Land' and 'Half Nelson', won the Golden Globe for 'La La Land' and had four other nominations, was nominated for the BAFTA for 'La La Land', has two AACTA Award nominations, and four SAG nominations, out of a total awards haul to date of 32 wins and a further 138 nominations. He has dated his 'Murder by Numbers' Co-Star Sandra Bullock from 2002 to 2003, his 'The Notebook' Co-Star Rachel McAdams from 2005 to 2007, and from 2011 he has been in a relationship with his 'The Place Beyond the Pines' Co-Star Eva Mendes, with whom he has two daughters - Esmeralda Amada (born 2014) and Amada Lee (born 2016).

When he's not Acting or pursuing other film interest Gosling is a supporter of various social causes, including 'PETA' (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), 'Invisible Children, Inc.' raising awareness of the Lord's Resistance Army in Central Africa and its head, Joseph Kony, and has worked with the 'Enough Project' to put an end to genocide and crimes against humanity in conflict zones in Africa especially. He has visited Chad, Uganda and Congo as part of his commitment.

Ryan Gosling, an active owner of a Moroccan Restaurant in Beverly Hills; was voted on several 'Top' lists including 50 Hottest Bachelor's, Male Star of Tomorrow, and 30 Under 30; often gets confused with that other well known Canadian Actor, Ryan Reynolds; has yet to star in a horror film or as a Superhero (although was considered for the role of 'Batman' before Ben Affleck was cast in 'Batman v. Superman') but has starred in just about every other genre; and adds a gritty, often emotionally detached realism to his roles for which he has won acclaim and which keeps us returning to the cinema. Emily Jean Stone was born in Scottsdale, Arizona to mother Krista Jean Yeager, a housewife and homemaker and father Jeffrey Charles Stone, the CEO and founder of a general contracting company. She attended Sequoya Elementary School and then Cocopah Middle School in Scottsdale. By her own admission she did not particularly like school but having a controlling nature she was determined to do well and score 'A's' in all subjects. As a child she suffered from panic attacks which negatively impacted her social skills, but attending therapy coupled with her local theatre interests in play acting helped cure her of this ailment. She first developed an interest in acting at the age of just four, and for several years took voice coaching lessons. Her acting debut came at age eleven in a stage production of 'The Wind in the Willows', after which she was home schooled for two years, and during which time she appeared in a further sixteen productions at the Phoenix Valley Youth Theatre. She travelled to Los Angeles to audition for the Nickelodeon Produced live action sketch comedy variety show 'All That' but was unsuccessful. Following this her parents enlisted her for private acting lessons. She then attended Xavier College Preparatory Catholic Girls High School in Phoenix but dropped out after just one semester to pursue a career as an Actress. 

In 2004 Stone moved with her mother to Los Angeles and auditioned for just about every role that she felt best qualified for . . . meeting with rejection at every turn. At the same time she registered for the Screen Actors Guild but the name of Emily Stone was already taken by someone else. She initially opted to use the stage name of Riley Stone but following one-off appearances on 'Medium', 'Lucky Louie' and 'Malcolm in the Middle' she favoured Emma Stone, and that name stuck. She auditioned for the Sci-Fi action drama series 'Heroes' but was unsuccessful here too, and appeared in the illegal car racing action drama series 'Drive' which was canned after just seven episodes in 2007. Stone got her first feature film role in 'Superbad' in 2007 starring Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Bill Hader, Dave Franco and Michael Cera. Stone was praised for her performance and it garnered her a Young Hollywood Award for the most 'Exciting New Face'. 'The Rocker' followed in 2008, then Comedy Romance 'The House Bunny' with Anna Faris, Colin Hanks and Hugh Heffner; followed by 'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past' with Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner and Michael Douglas; 'Paper Man' with Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Daniels and Lisa Kudrow, and the commercially successful adventure comedy horror offering 'Zombieland' with Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Bill Murray and Abigail Breslin seeing out the decade.  

2010 saw Stone launch with lending her voice to the animated feature film 'Marmaduke' with an all star voice cast including Steve Coogan, Kiefer Sutherland, Owen Wilson and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Also that year saw 'Easy A' in which Stone got top billing as a clean cut high school student who uses the schools grape vine and rumour mill to progress her social and financial standing. The film also starred Stanley Tucci, Thomas Haden Church, Patricia Clarkson, Lisa Kudrow and Malcolm McDowell, garnered Stone a number of award wins and nominations including her first Golden Globe nod, and was financially successful too.  

2011 saw 'Friends with Benefits'; then 'Crazy, Stupid Love' with Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, and Kevin Bacon and then a change of pace with the historical drama offering 'The Help' which picked up eighty award wins and another 116 nominations - among them Academy Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTA's and SAG's wins and nods. Stone starred with Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain, Sissy Spacek and Bryce Dallas Howard. The film grossed US$217M off the back of a US$25M production budget. The reboot of the 'Spider-Man' franchise for Marvel with Marc Webb's rendition of 'The Amazing Spider-Man' followed in 2012 with Stone playing Gwen Stacy to Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker/Spider-Man's first love interest. Stone would reprise the role in 2014's 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' again opposite Andrew Garfield. The two films combined grossed a total US$1,47B off a budgeted US$480M with Critics saying positive things about the Stone/Garfield pairing in the film and the on-screen chemistry that exists that only serves to heighten both performances.

Historical 1949 LA set gangster and mobster action crime drama 'Gangster Squad' was released in 2013 with Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Pena and Robert Patrick with this time Critics being kind to the pairing of Stone and Gosling, but less positive about the film generally. The film recovered US$106M from its US$75M outlay. The next year saw the Woody Allen Written and Directed 'Magic in the Moonlight' with Colin Firth. In between time there had been an appearance on a single episode of '30 Rock' and 'iCarly', and Stone lent her voice talents to the video game 'Sleeping Dogs' and the DreamWorks animated feature 'The Croods' together with Ryan Reynolds, Nicolas Cage and Catherine Keener, grossing US$588M from a US$135M budget expense.

2014 was seen out with the hugely successful Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu Co-Written and Directed 'Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)' starring Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Naomi Watts, and Andrea Riseborough. The film collected 193 Award wins and another 277 nominations including four Academy Award wins and five nominations, two Golden Globe wins and five nominations, one BAFTA win and nine nominations, and one SAG win and three nominations, of which Stone was nominated at each of these prestigious Awards for her Best Supporting Actress performance. The film also took US$104M in Box Office receipts against its US$18M budget investment.

This led to a turn with Writer/Director Woody Allen again in 2015 with the release of 'Irrational Man' alongside Joaquin Phoenix, and then later that same year in the Cameron Crowe Written and Directed 'Aloha' opposite Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray, Alec Baldwin, Jaeden Lieberher and Danny McBride.








After appearing in uncredited roles in 'The Interview' and 'Popstar : Never Stop Never Stopping', along came Damien Chazelle's Written and Directed song and dance drama 'La La Land' with Stone playing the female lead as Mia opposite Ryan Gosling's Sebastian with Rosemary DeWitt, John Legend and J.K. Simmons. The film was a huge critical success bagging 212 Award wins and a further 248 nominations including six Academy Awards and eight nominations, seven Golden Globe wins, five BAFTA wins and six nominations and one SAG win and one nomination. Amongst these Awards ceremonies Stone picked up the award for Best Leading Actress at each. The film also returned US$446M from its US$30M budget.

Released just a short time ago, next up for Stone was the biographical sports drama 'Battle of the Sexes' in which Stone portrays tennis legend Billie Jean King as she faces off against former mens tennis champion Bobby Riggs played by Steve Carell back in 1973 in what was back then the most widely watched television sports event in history. The film also stars Andrea Riseborough, Bill Pullman, Alan Cumming, Elisabeth Shue and Jessica McNamee. Whilst the film garnered mixed Critical Reviews and did lacklustre Box Office, Stone's performance was largely praised.

This brings us up to date, with next up for Stone is the Netflix series 'Maniac' alongside Jonah Hill which is currently in production for airing in 2018. Then there is the Yorgos Lanthimos Directed 18th Century historical biographical feature film 'The Favourite' about royal intrigue, envy, betrayal and passion in the court of Queen Anne, and starring Olivia Coleman, Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult and due in 2018 too. Currently in pre-production is 'Cruella' a live action feature film following the evil exploits of Cruella de Vil, following the storyline from '101 Dalmatians' with Stone playing the title character. And finally, and also in pre-production, Stone is set to reprise her role as Eep in the animated feature follow up 'The Croods 2' due in 2020.

All up Stone has forty-two Acting credits to her name and two Producer credits for upcoming TV series 'Maniac' and action comedy feature film 'Little White Corvette'. During her career to date she has also amassed 54 award wins and another 109 nominations including the Academy Award win, Golden Globe win, BAFTA win, AACTA win and SAG win for 'La La Land' as well as other wins from around the festival and awards circuit for 'The Help', 'Birdman' and 'Easy A'. For a few years from 2010 Stone and 'Spider-Man' Co-Star Andrew Garfield were said to be romantically linked, but by 2015 they were reported to have split. LA LA LAND : Tuesday 31st January 2017.

I finally got around to seeing the much acclaimed 'LA LA LAND' six weeks after its Australian release date. Having sat in a half packed theatre, it seemed as though the Australian cinema going public had also been carried along on the furore of the recently announced BAFTA and Oscar buzz, prompting still a decent viewing this far out. This musical romantic dramedy Written and Directed by Damien Chazelle whose last Directorial outing was the highly acclaimed 'Whiplash' seems to have struck pay-dirt again with this follow up. Praised for its Direction, praised for its two principle leads and praised for its musical numbers, this film harking back to a bygone era of song & dance musicals, cost US$30M to make, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August last year, and saw its US release in early December so far taking US$232M at the global Box Office. The film has been nominated in a record equalling fourteen categories in the upcoming Academy Awards (matched only with 1997's 'Titanic' and 1950's 'All About Eve') including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Music. It is also up for eleven BAFTA Awards, and it picked up a record breaking seven Golden Globes. All up 'La La Land' has amassed 144 award wins and another 214 nominations with the Oscar's and the BAFTA winners yet to be announced.

The film opens with a stirring song and dance routine set amidst traffic congestion on the on-ramp to a busy freeway into LA. With the traffic banked up on a hot day, it's down to the young and old to jump readily out of their cars and burst into song, dancing with each other amongst the parked cars, and adorned in the brightest most colourful dresses and figure hugging T-shirts that are orange, yellow, blue, red, green - all the colours of the rainbow in fact. It sets the tone for the film to follow. And here our two later-on would be star crossed lovers Mia Dolan (Emma Stone) and Sebastian Wilder (Ryan Gosling) suffer some minor road rage with each other which is their first interaction but certainly not their last.

Sebastian Wilder is an aspiring jazz pianist who has dreams of opening his own Jazz Club and Mia Dolan is an aspiring actress who makes espresso's in a Cafe at the Warner Brothers Studio lot where she works to make ends meet, in between the endless drudgery of auditions, whilst doting on the famous Actors she has to serve whilst on duty. After the road rage incident, Mia arrives back at her  apartment which she shares with three other girls. Cue for another song and dance routine as the girls make themselves up ready to hit a lavish party somewhere in the Hollywood Hills. Needless to say the girls are dressed in bright yellow, red, blue and green for the occasion. Leaving the party early she goes in search for her car, only to find it has been towed away, so begins the long trudge home in the early hours.

Walking home Mia come across a bar from which she can hear a pianist tickling the ivories, and she is drawn to enter by the playing. Sebastian Wilder is sat at the piano in the centre of the crowded room playing a pre-determined Christmas set-list as ordered to do so by the Club's owner Bill (J.K.Simmons) who demands Sebastian not to veer from his set-list of songs, or be fired. Sebastian can't help himself and he bursts into a jazz improvisation and is promptly dismissed by Bill. Storming out, Mia attempts to compliment him on his playing, but he brushes her off in his rage and exits the building.

Some months later, Mia is at another day time party at which Sebastian is playing electronic key board for an '80's cover band. She recognises him and ask that he play 'I Ran' that Flock of Seagulls classic to tease him for sinking to such depths and compromising his artistic integrity. After the party they leave together to walk to their cars decrying being in each others company despite the attraction they clearly feel for each other. Cue another song and dance routine with the backdrop of LA at dusk.

As time marches on the two fall for each other (cue romantic interludes that include a walk around the Warner Brothers Lot where Mia describes her acting ambitions and Sebastian outlines his jazz club aspirations; a trip to the movie theatre to see 'Rebel Without a Cause'; and a romantic dance at the Griffith Observatory as seen in 'Rebel Without a Cause'). Following more failed auditions Sebastian persuades Mia to write her own personal one-woman stage play, as Sebastian scores a regular gig playing jazz piano at a local Club. The happy couple move in together.

Soon afterwards Sebastian is approached by an old school mate, Keith (John Legend) who has his own jazz band but is in need of a keyboard player. At first Sebastian declines the offer, but then agrees - tempted by a regular salary of $1,000 per week and a percentage of all merchandise sales. At their first full rehearsal though Sebastian is taken aback by the pop-oriented approach to the bands jazz style, but he decides to stick with it - appreciating the lure of a steady income over his own dream. The band subsequently enjoy some success and go on a tour across the US which takes Sebastian away from home, and Mia, for prolonged periods.

One evening Mia comes home to find that Sebastian is there and has organised a surprise dinner for her. They talk and eat, and then he announces that he has to leave early in the morning to rejoin the band and how she should get used to his prolonged periods away from home. He envisages a studio album after this tour and then another tour to promote the album - a two year time line. They argue with Mia confronting Sebastian over his goals and dreams to own his own Club, which now seems farther away than ever. They argue more, at which point Mia leaves.

On the night of Mia's one woman self funded stage show opening, Sebastian fails to show up due to a forgotten Band photo shoot clashing with her Premier. Only a handful of people attend, and Mia from the wings hears dismissive comments from the audience. Despondent, after Sebastian finally shows up after the show has closed, she says she is leaving for her parents home at Boulder City, Nevada, to take stock of her acting aspirations. Later home alone Sebastian receives a call from a Casting Director looking for Mia, asking her to appear the next day for a movie audition, based on what she saw of Mia at her show recently. Sebastian drives to Boulder City to find Mia and bring her back to LA for the audition. Mia is reluctant at first given her previous experiences with auditions, but relents and drives back with Sebastian the next day. Needless to say Mia gets the part after singing her way through a personal and heartfelt audition. The film is to be rehearsed for there months and shot in Paris over four months, separating the couple again. Despite their uncertain future together, they profess their undying love for each other - for always.

Fast forward five years and Mia is a successful Actress in her own right, and married to another man, with whom she has a young daughter. One evening after dinner they stumble across a jazz bar in downtown LA somewhere and enter, take a seat and listen to the jazz musicians. The sign above the door welcomes them to 'Seb's' - a logo that Mia recognises because she designed it years earlier. Eventually Sebastian emerges and thanks his musicians and recognises Mia sat in the audience. Their eyes meet, and Sebastian is unsettled by the sudden appearance of his love after all these years. He sits at the piano and plays their theme, after which she leaves, turning back one more time before exiting the door. Their eyes meet once more and they give a knowing smile to each other. Fade to black!

In this era dominated by animation blockbusters, epic comic book adaptations, Superhero and Sci-Fi stories writ large, it is good to see a song and dance throw back to the films of yesteryear that revitalises the genre for a whole new audience, that clearly has struck a chord commercially and critically. There is no sex, no violence, no drugs, no car chases, no explosions, no deaths, and from memory not even any coarse language muttered in this film - it's just good honest to goodness entertainment. The film is well crafted, colourful, has a reasonable if simple storyline interspersed with reasonable song & dance routines. But, for me the flaw is in the singing and dancing abilities of the two lead characters - neither Stone of Gosling have the strongest voices you have ever heard, and the dancing is simply choreographed and not over complicated. I too would question its worthiness for fourteen Oscar, eleven BAFTA nods and even a record breaking seven Golden Globes wins. 'La La Land' is good solid nostalgic entertainment showcasing a genre that is seldom seen these days, so good on Damien Chazalle for giving it another crack, and for reigniting our interest with his assured Direction, colour, heartfelt passion, and a simple story well told.

Damien Sayre Chazelle was born in Providence, Rhode Island to mother Celia Martin, a writer and Professor of History at The College of New Jersey, and father Bernard Chazelle, a Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University. He has a sister Anna, who is an actress and circus performer. He attended the comprehensive public Princeton High School in New Jersey where film making was a keen interest for him, but he got sidetracked by the possibility of a music career as a jazz drummer which was to become the inspiration for his breakout film 'Whiplash' courtesy of an intense music teacher. He knew though that he never had the talent to make it big musically, so instead he reverted back to his first love and studied film making in the Visual and Environmental Studies Department at Harvard University from where he graduated in 2007.

Chazelle's big screen debut came in 2009 with the jazz musical film 'Guy and Medeline on a Park Bench' which he Directed, Co-Produced, Wrote, Co-Edited and acted as Cinematographer on. The film performed very well critically, and was widely shown around the worldwide festival circuit where it picked up a handful of awards and nominations. The film features a cast of non-professional actors, but accomplished musicians nonetheless. Chazelle also provide the lyrics for the films original music score.

In 2013 Chazelle wrote and Directed an eighteen minute short film called 'Whiplash' which was to be the pre-cursor for his highly acclaimed feature film of the same name released in 2014. Telling the story of the relationship between an ambitious jazz student, played by Miles Teller and his abusive domineering music teacher played by J.K.Simmons, the film went on to win three Academy Awards, one Golden Globe, three BAFTA's and a SAG award amongst its haul of 91 wins in total and a further 135 nominations. The film cost just US$3.5M to make and raked in US$49M at the Box Office.

Also in 2013 Chazelle took Writer credits on the supernatural horror drama film 'The Last Exorcism Part II', and 'Grand Piano' an English language Spanish film telling the story of a pianist making a comeback performance under threat from a sniper who has targeted him for death if he dare play one wrong note. The film starred Elijah Wood and John Cusack, and received largely favourable Reviews. In 2016 Chazelle also Co-Wrote the Sci-Fi psychological thriller '10, Cloverfield Lane' which took US$109M at the Box Office from its US$15M production budget and again garnered generally positive Reviews.

This gave way to the recently released 'La La Land' which has received universal critical acclaim. This romantic musical comedy drama film was Written and Directed by Chazelle, made for US$30M and has so far grossed US$91M, and has picked up 112 award wins including a history making seven Golden Globe wins, and 180 nominations including eleven BAFTA nods yet to be announced and excluding the yet be announced Academy Award nominations also. The film stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the two lead roles, with John Legend, J.K.Simmons and Rosemary DeWitt amongst others supporting. 

Next up for Chazelle is 'First Man' which will be Directed by Chazelle, teaming up with Ryan Gosling again in the lead role as Neil Armstrong in this biopic of the first man on the Moon based on the best selling book by James Hansen. All up Chazelle has seven Writer credits to his name, five as Director, three as Producer and two for Soundtrack lyrics. He has amassed 46 award wins and a further 104 nominations excluding this years Academy Award nominations for 'La La Land' which are still to be announced at the time of writing. Chazelle was married for four years to Writer, Producer and Director Jasmine McGlade from 2010 to 2014.

Damien Chazelle - the current toast of Hollywood and the Darling of Tinsel Town, riding the crest of a wave of success that started in no small way with a debut feature and is still gaining momentum. It's been another year of movie Reviews, Previews, Birthday Tributes and sadly a few obituaries along the way. In the last twelve months I have Posted 62 Reviews of the films I have seen at the Odeon, and I have Previewed 218 new release films to give you the inside word on what's hot (and perhaps what's not!) and coming to a movie theatre near you. I thank-you for you ongoing support of this humble little movie Blog that in recent weeks has seen my all time visits surpass 51,000 as our global reach expands. And so with a slew of new release films coming your way this week and in the weeks and months ahead, 2017 promises to be more of the same, but different! Best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year, and I look forward to seeing you in 2017 at the movies and at this Blog. Happy New Year!

Turning to the week ahead, we have seven new release films to tease you out to you local multiplex. Kicking off with a WWII drama of a derring do intelligence officer teaming up with a French Resistance fighter in more ways than one; then a modern day take on the song and dance musicals of yesteryear that is already generating Oscar buzz; and then a bio-pic of influential musical talents of the '60's that helped define an era of what we listed to. We turn next to an Aussie outback story of a teenage lad and a stray dog who form a friendship in this prequel to a much loved film of a few years back. This is followed by a RomCom of an unlikely coupling of an extroverted Billionaire man and his introverted student girlfriend whose parents are hell bent on ensuring their relationship and pending marriage fails before it has begun. We then wrap up with two animated features that sees a strong return to form from the House of the Mouse with a Polynesian offering an adventure story of a highly spirited teenage girl paired up with a Demi-God to fulfil her quest; before we wrap up with this all star voice cast film of a struggling Koala looking to revive the fortunes of his once famed theatre by staging a singing contest to end all singing contests.

With seven features offering everything from war time drama, to nostalgic song & dance routines, to musical bio-pic, to romantic comedy, canine Aussie outback adventure and a couple of strong animated films you have every reason to see a movie during this festive holiday period. 'ALLIED' (Rated M) - Directed by Robert Zemickis and Written by Steven Knight based on a story he had been told some thirty years ago during his days around the US, which whilst not confirmed as being true, proved too good to be true not to make a film out of it. And so whilst the notion has been kicking around for thirty years or so, it is only now that his story has been committed to celluloid. Costing US$85M the film opened in the US in late November and has so far made back US$78M, and garnered generally positive reviews since, particularly for its two lead performers.

Here Royal Canadian Airforce Intelligence Officer Max Vatan (Brad Pitt) must travel to Casablanca to assassinate a German Ambassador. He is partnered up with French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard) who fled from France after her resistance group was compromised and killed. During their mission masquerading as man and wife they grow close, and following its success Max asks Marianne to join him back in England, where they settle down, marry and have a daughter together. Fast forward twelve months and Max learns from a Special Operations Executive, that Marianne is in fact suspected of being a German spy, having assumed the identity of the real Marianne, now long since dead. Max therefore needs to learn the truth about Marianne as their relationship is put to the test with the backdrop of war, suspicion, trust and love. Also starring Jared Harris, Matthew Goode and Lizzy Caplan.

'LA LA LAND' (Rated M) - this musical romantic dramedy Written and Directed by Damien Chazelle whose last Directorial outing was the highly acclaimed 'Whiplash' seems to have struck pay-dirt again with this follow up, the equally highly acclaimed 'La La Land'. Praised for its Direction, praised for its two principle leads and praised for its musical numbers, this film harking back to a bygone era of song & dance musicals, cost US$30M to make, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August this year, and saw its US release earlier this month so far taking US$21M. Telling the story of Sebastian Wilder (Ryan Gosling) an aspiring jazz pianist who has dreams of opening his own Jazz Club and Mia Dolan (Emma Stone) an aspiring actress who makes espresso's at the film studios where she works to make ends meet. In their native Los Angeles, following a freak meeting and then being reunited some months later, the pair fall for each other bonding by their common desire to follow their dreams and pursue what they love in their lives. But as success starts to build for them both they are forced into making decisions that will pull at the framework of their affair, and the dreams they have worked together and supported each other in threatens to tear them apart. Also starring J.K.Simmons, Rosmarie DeWitt and John Legend. There is Oscar buzz around this film, so best add it to your list of must-sees!

'GIMME DANGER' (Rated M) - another musical, of sorts, but not as you know it. This bio-pic Written and Directed by Jim Jarmusch (having his second released movie in two weeks following the previously Previewed 'Paterson') is a tribute to quite possibly one of the most influential rock bands of the era - 'The Stooges'. Emerging onto the American music scene in the late '60's with a mix of rock, R&B, blues and jazz with Iggy Pop as the flamboyant, aggressive and powerful front man, The Stooges paved for the way for the punk scene and alternative rock that became the hall marks of the '70's and '80's music landscape. Jarmusch here presents an in depth documentary film charting the bands early rise to fame and notoriety with archival footage and interviews with Iggy Pop and the band members.

'RED DOG : TRUE BLUE' (Rated PG) - 2011's Aussie outback story of a loyal Kelpie/Cattle Dog cross that roamed Western Australia Pilbara mining region searching for his master was highly acclaimed, picked up numerous awards, toured the festival circuit and made back AU$21M from its AU$8M budget. Now in 2016 the follow up film has arrived. Based originally on the Louis de Bernieres book of the same name, this sort of prequel is written for the screen again by Daniel Taplitz and Directed again by Kriv Stenders. This time though the action is more kid-friendly as young teenager Mick (Levi Miller) is relocated from the big city to an outback town in remote Western Australia sometime during the late '60's. Mick is a kid all alone in the vast expanse of Australia's desert outback, and here he befriends 'Blue' the dog (played by Phoenix) whom he rescues one night during a storm. And here we have a friendship forged out of mud (literally) that see the two get up to all sorts of exploits, adventures and doubtless some danger along the way. Will this be as endearing as that first film - only you can decide! Also starring Bryan Brown, John Jarrett, Jason Issacs and Steve Le Marquand.

'WHY HIM' (Rated MA15+) - Co-Written for the screen and Directed by John Hamburg, and based on a story by Jonah Hill, Hamburg and Ian Helfer this RomCom cost US$38M to make and has among its producer credits Ben Stiller and Shawn Levy. Starring James Franco as Laird Mayhew a famous heavily tattooed extroverted billionaire who falls for Stephanie Fleming (Zoey Deutch) a student at Stamford University. When Stephanie's parents Ned (Bryan Cranston) and Barb (Megan Mullally) plan a visit to see her during the holiday break, what they don't plan on is meeting Stephanie's boyfriend Laird. Alarm bells begin ringing immediately for the over protective and disapproving Ned, who can't withstand Laird's freewheeling attitude and his colourful language. Things are further complicated when Laird announces to Ned that he intends to ask for his daughters hand in marriage in less than a week. And so the race is on for Laird to prove himself to Ned and Barb that he is a worthy, responsible, committed suitor for their daughter, and for Ned to ensure that Laird crashes and burns without a trace in the process.

'MOANA' (Rated PG) - from Disney Animation comes their first animated feature film centred around the people and culture of Polynesia, and with it comes critical acclaim and a Box Office haul that stands at US$295M since its Stateside opening towards the end of November. The story revolves around a young Polynesian girl named Moana (voiced by Auli'l Carvalho) who is being groomed to take over one day from her father - the Chief of the Island of Motunui. Moana is a head strong young thing and has different ideas. One day while collecting shells she is summonsed by the ocean itself to return an ancient relic to the island Goddess, Te Fiti. She sets out on her quest going beyond the forbidden waters of her island home, where she goes in search of legendary DemiGod Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) to help her in her mission, and save her island home from a blight that has stricken it and threatens its very survival. Also starring the voice talents of Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Jemaine Clement and Alan Tudyk this film is likely to please all comers.

'SING' (Rated G) - made by Illumination Entertainment, this computer animated musical comedy is Written, Directed and stars the voice talents of Garth Jennings amongst an ensemble cast of notable others including Matthew McConaughey (as dapper koala bear Buster Moon), Seth McFarlane, John C. Reilly, Taron Egerton, Reece Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Saunders. Buster Moon is the owner of a once grand and renowned music theatre that has fallen on hard times. Being the eternal optimist that he is, he hatches a plan to restore his beloved theatre to its former glory, and save his theatre from crumbling away around him. That plan involves staging the biggest singing contest the world has ever seen by offering a prize of $1,000, however, a printing issue sees the marketing fliers for the competition read $100,000! Featuring some 85 classic and well known songs by famous artists, and an original song by Stevie Wonder and Ariana Grande, this film is sure to get the feet tapping if nothing else. Costing US$75M to make, the film went on release in the US only last week and has so far made US$73M.

With something for everyone this cinema going week nestled nicely between Christmas and New Year there is once agin no excuse for you not to get out amongst it at your local movie theatre.
