Amongst the World Premier movies showing at this years virtual festival is 'Undergods', 'The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw', 'Hunted', 'Kriya', 'The Undertaker's Home', 'Come True', '#ShakespearsShitstorm', 'Unearth' and 'Tiny Tim : King for a Day'. You can check out the full schedule of events, session times and a whole lot more at the official website, at : https://fantasiafestival.com

This week then there are four latest release new films coming your way at the local Odeon. We kick start with a highly anticipated film from an acclaimed Director that is reportedly going to re-launch the cinema going experience and convince the movie industry that there remains a healthy appetite for blockbuster films to be seen on the big screen. That film pits the fate of the world squarely on the shoulders of one man and his handler as they travel the world looking to overthrow a Russian Oligarch while playing with time itself. Next up we have a Chinese film about a war time siege on a warehouse as the Chinese Army seek to defend it from advancing Japanese troops. We then have a French film set in the aftermath of the 2018 World Cup and the escalation of Police violence especially amongst the poorer and younger ethnic communities of Paris, and we close out the week with an Aussie biopic of a famed songstress of the '60's and '70's who also became the poster girl for the second wave feminist movement.

Whatever your taste in big screen film entertainment is this week - be it any of the four latest release new movies as Previewed below, or those doing the rounds currently on general release or as Reviewed and Previewed in previous Blog Posts here at Odeon Online, you are most welcome to share your movie going thoughts, opinions and observations by leaving your relevant, succinct and appropriate views in the Comments section below this or any other Post. We'd love to hear from you, and in the meantime, enjoy your big screen Odeon outing during the coming week.

'TENET' (Rated M) - here, finally, is the much hyped eagerly awaited spy drama film Directed, Written and Co-Produced by Christopher Nolan, who I'm sure needs no further introduction, other than his film Directing credits have amassed global Box Office returns of about US$4.7B and he has won 137 awards and been nominated 228 other times, so I guess he must be doing something right! Originally slated for a 17th July release, this was subsequently pushed back because of COVID-19 to 31st July, then 12th August and now gets a release in seventy countries from this week, before its release in the US and China next week. Costing somewhere in the region of US$220M to make, the film has garnered mostly favourable Reviews from Critics. Riffing off James Bond with exotic locations, extravagant action set pieces, international espionage, a Russian bad guy hell bent on bring about the end of the world as we know it, and the good guys working for a covert secret outfit this is sure to please . . . if you can get your head around the premise.

Here, going only by the moniker of The Protagonist (John David Washington) is working for a secret organisation known as 'Tenet'. His handler is Neil (Robert Pattinson) and between them they are tasked with over throwing a power crazy Russian Oligarch Andrei Sator (Kenneth Branagh) intent on world destruction by starting WWIII. And so with the fate of the entire world hanging in the balance The Protagonist must  journey through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that unfolds in something beyond real time, not time travel, but time inversion! Also starring Elizabeth Debicki, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clemence Poesy, Michael Caine and Martin Donovan.

'THE EIGHT HUNDRED' (Rated CTC) - this Chinese historical war time drama film is Directed by Guan Hu who made his feature film debut in 1994 with 'Dirt' - a portrayal of Beijing's rock music scene. Since then he has made 'Cow' in 2009, 'The Chef, the Actor, the Scoundrel' in 2013, 'Mr. Six' in 2015, plus segments in the anthology films 'Run for Love' in 2016 and 'My People, My Country' in 2019. Initially slated for a July 2019 release, the film was subject to controversy and possible government interference, before being moved to a 21st August release date in its native China, and a limited release in Australia from this week. Off a budget of US$80M the film has so far grossed US$116M. The story here unfolds on 13th August 1937, as the Imperial Japanese Army invades Shanghai, Lieutenant Colonel Xie Jinyuan (Du Chun), of the 524th Regiment of the 88th Division of the National Revolutionary Army, leads more than 400 young officers, soldiers and draft dodgers to guard the Sihang Warehouse complex in Shanghai over a four day siege just as Japanese forces are beginning to overwhelm China.

'LES MISERABLES' (Rated MA15+) - here this French drama film has absolutely nothing to do with the famed 1862 novel by Victor Hugo other than the fact that this film is set in the commune of Montfermeil and Hugo's novel was written and partially set in that same place. This is the feature film Directorial debut of Ladj Ly and based on his short film of the same name from 2017. It had its World Premiere showing at the May 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize. It was released in France in late November 2019 and received critical acclaim, earning twelve nominations at the Cesar Awards and winning four including Best Film. All up the film collected nineteen award wins and a further forty-eight nominations including an Oscar nod for Best International Feature Film. The film has so far grossed US$19M and has generated largely favourable Reviews. Set during the aftermath of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and based on a real-life occurrence of Police violence which took place in the city on October 14th 2008, and was observed and filmed by Ly. The story follows several characters within the commune, as a theft from a teenager spirals into the threat of a larger crisis. The film depicts abuses against poor citizens, especially teenagers of sub-Saharan African or Maghrebi ethnicities, thus emphasising the ongoing plight of the poor in Montfermeil.

'I AM WOMAN' (Rated M) - is an Australian biographical film offering Directed and Co-Produced by Unjoo Moon that saw its World Premier screening at TIFF back in September last year, before its very limited theatrical release in Australia this week and before it streams throughout Australia from 28th August onward on Stan. In 1966 aged 24, Helen Reddy (Tilda Cobham-Hervey) arrives in New York with her three-year-old daughter, a suitcase and just US$230 in her back pocket. Promised a recording contract which the company then renegs on, she is left stranded in the Big Apple without a visa but she decides to stay and pursue a singing career. Then she meets with influential rock music journalist Lillian Roxon (Danielle Macdonld) and within five years she had become one of the biggest superstars of her time, with close to thirty number one US singles, her own hourly TV show and an icon of the '70's feminist movement, which adopted her power anthem 'I Am Woman'. She also meets Jeff Wald (Evan Peters), a young up & coming talent manager who ultimately becomes her agent and husband. Whilst Wald helps her get to the top of her profession, he also suffers from a drug addiction, which gradually turns their relationship toxic. The film has been largely praised.

With four new release films this week to tempt you out to your local Odeon, remember to share your movie going thoughts with your other like minded cinephile friends afterwards here at Odeon Online. In the meantime, I'll see you sometime somewhere in the week ahead, at your local Odeon.

Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA, to mother Kathleen Ann McCauley, a former Actress who inspired her daughter to follow in her footsteps, and father Gerald Thomas Hathaway, a lawyer. At age six, the family moved to Milburn, New Jersey with her older brother Michael and younger brother Thomas. She attended the Brooklyn Heights Montessori School, the Wyoming Elementary School in Milburn and then Milburn High School where she took part in numerous school plays. She appeared in several productions at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse and went on to study at New York University's Gallatin School of Individualised Study. She then went on to The American Academy of Dramatic Arts and was the first teenager admitted to the acting programme of the Off-Broadway Theatre Company 'The Barrow Group'. Towards the end of the '90's she sang soprano at Carnegie Hall with the All-Eastern US High School Honors Chorus. She was raised a Roman Catholic and in her early childhood years had designs on becoming a nun, but by fifteen and upon learning that her brother Michael was gay, she changed her mind on the basis that she could not support a religion that could not support her brother.

At sixteen Hathaway scored her first television role in 'Get Real' which ran over just 22 episodes and for one season only in this Fox Television comedy drama series with Jesse Eisenberg. In 2001 she gained her first big screen role in the Garry Marshall Directed 'The Princess Diaries' opposite Julie Andrews. The film was a commercial success and was well received by critics too. Playing the lead role of Mia Thermopolis, Hathaway reprised her role in 2004 in 'The Princess Diaries 2 : Royal Engagement' again Directed by Garry Marshall and once more with Julie Andrews. Garry Marshall announced in March this year that a third film in the series would be made starring Hathaway again, after she had given birth to her first child expected around that time. Those plans were scuppered when Marshall died in July this year.

'The other side of Heaven' followed in 2001 with Hathaway winning the role over 500 other hopefuls. She followed this up with comedy-drama 'Nicholas Nickleby' in 2002 with Jamie Bell, Charlie Hunnam, Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall and Nathan Lane. Whilst not a commercial success due to its limited release, Hathaway's performance was praised. 'Ella Enchanted' followed in 2004 leading up to 'The Princess Diaries 2'. By now she had appeared in family oriented film fare only and was seen as a role model to young kids, girls especially, and was in danger of being forever typecast. Hathaway was ready by now, for more adult fare.

In 2005 she appeared in 'Havoc' - a teenage hip-hop crime drama film with Bijou Phillips, Michael Biehn and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. That same years she starred opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in Ang Lee's critically acclaimed drama 'Brokeback Mountain', and then equally acclaimed and commercially successful 'The Devil Wears Prada' with Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Simon Barker and Stanley Tucci.

Biographical romantic drama 'Becoming Jane' came next with James McAvoy, with Hathaway in the lead role as Jane Austen. The big screen rendition of the classic Mel Brooks secret agent satirical television series of the late 60's 'Get Smart' was released in 2008 with Hathaway playing Agent 99 to Steve Carell's Maxwell Smart. Jonathan Demme's 'Rachel Getting Married' garnered Hathaway a Best Actress Academy Award nomination. 'Passengers' followed, and then 'Bride Wars' and Garry Marshall's 'Valentine's Day' with a huge ensemble cast and a big commercial success despite its largely negative Reviews, saw out the decade.

In 2010 Hathaway starred as the White Queen in Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland' - a role she would reprise in 2016's 'Alice Through the Looking Glass'. Burton's earlier film made US$1.025B at the Box Office and picked up a slew of award wins and nominations. 'Love and other Drugs' for Director Edward Zwick was also released in 2010 with Jake Gyllenhaal, then 'One Day' with Jim Sturgess, and then her role in Christopher Nolan's closing film in the Batman trilogy as Selina Kyle/Cat Woman in the hugely successful 'The Dark Knight Rises' opposite Christian Bale.

Next up came her Academy Award winning turn as Fantine in Tom Hooper's 'Les Miserables' alongside Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham carter. The film won three Academy Awards and another eighty wins and a further 170 nominations, and returned US$442M from its US$61M budget outlay.

Cameo appearances in 'Don Jon' and 'Don Peyote' came next, before 'Song One', and then a return to Christopher Nolan in his epic Sci-Fi adventure drama film 'Interstellar' with Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain. Again a huge commercial and critical success earning US$675M from its US$165M budget and picking up forty award wins and 134 nominations along the way. 2015 brought 'The Intern' with Robert De Niro and then 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' this year and 'Colossal' still awaiting a general release bringing us up to date. In the meantime Hathaway has lent her voice talents to 'Hoodwinked' in 2005, the voice of Jewel on 'Rio' in 2011 and its sequel 'Rio 2' in 2014, and various episodes of 'Family Guy' and 'The Simpsons' over the years. She has hosted too three episodes of 'Saturday Night Live' and the '83rd Academy Awards' in 2011 with James Franco.

Coming up is the aforementioned 'Colossal' and 'Ocean's Eight' - an all girl spin off to the successful 'Ocean's Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen' franchise currently filming for a 2018 release, and co-starring Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Helena Bonham Carter, Rhianna and Damian Lewis for Director, Gary Ross. 'Live Fast Die Hot' has recently been announced and in development is 'The Modern Ocean' for Shane Carruth with Keanu Reeves, Daniel Radcliffe, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield and Chloe Grace Moritz all attached.

All up Hathaway has forty Acting credits to her name, two as Producer and thirteen for her singing performances on screen. She won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role in 'Les Miserables' and also a BAFTA and Golden Globe for the same. Over her time to date she has amassed 65 award wins and another 97 nominations including another Oscar nod for 'Rachel Getting Married', two other Golden Globe nods and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

She married Adam Shulman in late 2011 and together they have a son - Jonathan Rosebanks born in March this year. Hathaway supports several charitable causes including those associated with Human Rights, Children's Research and Same Sex Marriage.

Anne Hathaway - has grown up on the big screen from teen family fare to serious adult oriented films; has been voted on more 'Top Lists' in the last decade than you care to count; she acts, she sings, she hosts; is a reformed smoker, vegetarian and vegan; has appeared in small independent films and epic blockbusters and is already at the top of her game with the world it seems at her feet! Happy Birthday to you Anne, from Odeon Online.

Edward John David Redmayne was born in Westminster, London, England to mother Patricia Burke who managed a relocation business and father Richard Redmayne, a senior banking businessman. He has an older brother James, a younger brother Thomas, and two half brothers, Eugene and Charles. He attended the independent prep, school for boys - Colet Court in Barnes, London, and then Eton College and did so in the same year as Prince William. Leaving there he went onto Trinity College, Cambridge studying the history of art from where he graduated in 2003. He took drama lessons from an early age having been encouraged to do so by his parents, which he continued throughout school and university, including with the National Youth Music Theatre. His first stage gig was in the Sam Mendes production of 'Oliver' playing a workhouse boy.

Before turning to professional acting Redmayne modelled for Burberry with Alex Pettyfer and Cara Delevingne. He made his professional stage debut in Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night' in 2002 for which he won the award for Most Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, and then Best Newcomer at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards for 'The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?' in 2005. In 2009 he appeared in 'Red' for which he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and he then took the play to Broadway for a fifteen week run for which he won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play. He subsequently played Richard II in 'Richard II' in London's Donmar Warehouse.

Redmayne graduated from some minor television roles with his debut feature film in 2006 with 'Like Minds' starring alongside Toni Collette and Richard Roxburgh, with 'The Good Shepherd' coming next that same year as Directed by Robert De Niro with a huge cast including the great man himself with Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Alec Baldwin and William Hurt. The following year saw 'Savage Grace' with Julianne Moore and that same year 'Elizabeth : The Golden Age' with Cate Blanchett in the title role and Geoffrey Rush and Clive Owen. Redmayne had starred in 2005 in a television mini-series 'Elizabeth I' playing the Earl of Southampton -  a role that doubtless prepared him well for this one!

2008 brought 'The Yellow Handkerchief' with William Hurt again, and 'The Other Boleyn Girl' with Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Eric Bana and Benedict Cumberbatch. 2009 saw 'Powder Blue' with Forest Whittaker, Ray Liotta and Patrick Swayze, and 'Glorious 39' that same year with Christopher Lee, Bill Nighy and Juno Temple, and 'Black Death' a year later with Sean Bean. As the decade drew to a close there had also been television mini-series 'The Pillars of the Earth' and 'Tess of the D'Urbevilles'.

'Hick' kicked of 2011 with Chloe Grace Moretz and Juliette Lewis, with 'My Week with Marilyn' starring Michelle Williams, Julia Ormond and Kenneth Branagh, and then Kathryn Bigelow's 'The Miraculous Year' with Susan Sarandon and Frank Langella. 2012 saw 'Les Miserables' with Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter.

2014 hailed Redmayne's Oscar winning turn as Stephen Hawking in 'The Theory of Everything', before The Wachowski's 'Jupiter Ascending' a year later with Sean Bean again, Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis. 'The Danish Girl' is up next early this year with Alicia Vikander and Ben Whishaw with 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' currently in post-production and based on the book of the same name by one J.K.Rowling who also penned that lesser known series of books about one certain young magician whizz kid Harry Potter.

All up Redmayne has 24 acting credits to his name so far. He won the Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA for his lead role in 'The Theory of Everything' and has a pending nomination for this years Golden Globes for his role in the upcoming 'The Danish Girl' as well as sixteen other award wins and a further 54 nominations. When he picked up his Oscar statue in 2015 he was the first actor to do so born in the 1980's, and, he picked up his award alongside Best Actress Julianne Moore for 'Still Alice' - his co-star from 'Savage Grace' some years earlier. He is also strongly touted for further critical acclaim and recognition with Tom Hooper's 'The Danish Girl' due in Australian Cinema's on 28th January.

In December 2014 he married Hannah Bagshaw, and in the Queen's Birthday Honours List was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to drama.

Eddie Redmayne - rising star of stage, television, film and already much lauded and highly acclaimed; deeply grounded, diverse acting range and keeps it real whether playing bio-pics, period pieces, Sci-Fi or present day drama and infinitely watchable as a result. Hugh Michael Jackman was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia to Grace McNeil and Christopher John Jackman. Both English, he is the youngest of five children. His parents moved to Australia just before his birth in 1968, as part of the 'Ten Pound Pom' programme. When he was eight years of age his parents divorced and his mother returned to England to live with his two sisters, leaving him, his two brothers and his Accountant Father in Australia.

Jackman attended Pymble Public School and then Knox Grammar School where he starred in the 1985 production of 'My Fair Lady', and in 1986 he became the School Captain. After graduating from school he spent a gap year working at Uppingham School in England, and following his return he attended the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) and graduated from there in 1991 with a BA Degree in Communications. In his last year at UTS he took drama classes to earn extra credits, and after finishing there he spent a year at the Actors Centre in Sydney completing 'The Journey'. This lead to an offer to star in the popular TV Series 'Neighbours' which he turned down to attend the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at Edith Cowan University in Perth - from which he graduated in 1994.

His first major role came in a ten part drama series for the ABC in 1995, 'Correlli' - which ended after its first season. From there though he gained more TV work starring in 'Blue Heelers', 'The Man from Snowy River' and 'Halifax f.p.' but it was 1999 that gave him his breakout film roles in 'Erskineville Kings' and 'Paperback Hero'. In the meantime Jackman had been treading the boards and gaining a following for his lead role in the West End stage production of 'Oklahoma'. As the century drew to a close, he was cast in a film in 1999 that would cement his big screen career forever - Bryan Singer's 'X-Men' released in 2000 as brooding, angry, tormented and clawed Wolverine.
