AMERICAN SNIPER : Tuesday 27th January 2015.

Nominated for six golden statues at the upcoming 2015 Academy Awards, I saw 'AMERICAN SNIPER' earlier this week at my local multiplex with a bunch of mates. Like the other films that this one is up against in the Best Motion Picture and Best Actor categories this is a very solid screen telling of this true story set against the back drop of the War in Iraq in the aftermath of 9/11. Directed by Clint Eastwood, this was at first attached to Steven Spielberg, and I have to say I think this would have been a very different film had Spielberg not passed it up, despite his success with the likes of 'Private Ryan' and 'Schindler's List' - his other dramatic war time fare.

Here Eastwood has returned to the form we have not seen in a while, demonstrating his prowess behind the camera with a deft touch that sticks to the fundamentals of the story, does not over dramatise, and concentrates on the main character traits of his key subjects against a backdrop that is gritty, intense, emotional and immediate. Having not read the book upon which this film is based, I am told by those that have that there are some key departures from those written words - but hey, that's Hollywood and sometimes you can't let the truth get in the way of a good story!

And so this is the story of Chris Kyle (played out brilliantly by Bradley Cooper and never better) - a small town Texan kid growing up in a disciplined environment with his subservient Mum & strict God fearing authoritative Dad, and younger brother with dreams of becoming a cowboy. He attends church, respects his parents and his elders and learns to shoot from a young age - killing his first deer on a hunting trip with his father when he is about ten years of age. Growing up he leads a country life as a cowboy with his brother, drifting in & out of relationships, drinking beer, and riding rodeo. In the lead up to his 30th birthday he sees news footage on the TV of a terrorist attack against Americans on foreign soil from an unknown enemy - this prompts him to join the Navy SEALS to help safeguard his beloved country.

What follows is the obligatory training camp montage where he is trained to within an inch of his life, and toward the end of this he meets Taya (Sienna Miller) in a bar, and they eventually marry. Their marriage comes in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and following the wedding and a brief honeymoon he disappears off to Iraq on his first tour of duty as the 'American Sniper' of the title.

His first kill on active duty is a young boy who exits a building with his mother - beneath her clothing she conceals a large looking anti-tank grenade which he identifies through his rifle sights. The woman mishandles the device as they move toward advancing US soldiers and an oncoming tank amongst the rubble of a war torn city. The boy runs with they grenade lurching toward the tank but is taken out by Kyle, and then the lads mother, in quick succession before the missile can reach its intended target. This sets the tone and tells us we are witnessing a cool, calculating, conscience free soldier doing what he does best, and protecting his colleagues, his country and his family ultimately, and can do so without hesitation. As his first tour progresses Kyle gains a reputation for his sharp shooting and in so doing saving the lives of countless fellow soldiers who all feel a debt of gratitude toward him, earning him the moniker of 'The Legend'.

He returns home after his first tour and Taya is pregnant with their first child. Following their son's birth, Kyle returns to Iraq for his second tour for more of the same - taking out insurgents with sharp shooting military precision time and time again. He does so a third time and then a fourth and amassing a confirmed kill record of 160, making him the most successful sniper in US military history! But each time he returns home, the emotional scars of battle are deeper. Kyle is fractured, distant, uncommunicative and clearly the strain of his job, what he has witnessed and the pressure to live up to the expectations of a 'hero' are a very heavy burden takings its toll on Taya, his young son and his second child, a daughter.

He is a driven man - driven by his his duty to God, to his country and to his family - in that order, and, to take out an insurgent sniper who is acting against him, and who is intent too on taking out Kyle. This sniper has become Kyle's own private obsession and partly the reason why he feels compelled to return because he stands in the way of a high-level evil drilling killing lunatic of a man known as 'The Butcher' and has been responsible for killing many of Kyle's buddies in the line of active duty. We learn that the insurgents have placed a significant bounty on Kyle's head, and so it is his personal crusade to either kill or be killed.

All of this continues to take it's toll on Kyle's mental and emotional state that he bottles up inside him as each tour comes & goes and he witnesses more & more the horrors of modern day combat and close quarter warfare. Eastwood doesn't spare the body count either on each side as friends and foe are sacrificed all in the name of freedom, but, there are no political statements here, no flag waving, no Uncle Sam spraying Iraq with a can of whoop ass! This story is Kyle's story, told through his eyes and the impact of war upon one man and the repercussions of it on those closest to him. Cooper gives a bold and convincing turn as the war torn, battle scared, emotionally fractured soldier just doing what he thinks is right. Sienna Miller too is solid as the left at home wife and mother torn between her love of her husband and her family but unable to reconcile what he does, why he does it, and for whom ultimately.

A must-see film that ranks up there with 'The Hurt Locker', but seen from a very different perspective, and probably one of the boldest accounts we have yet seen on the silver screen of the Iraq War and its direct and indirect impacts.

What's new in Odeon's this week : Thursday 22nd January 2015.

As Sydney sizzles in the sun drenched heat of Summer we have two more big ticket movies hitting our big screens in the coming week - both of them in Oscar contention, and both of them riding the crest of a publicity wave that is generating much excitement and anticipation. Already we have seen a very solid start to 2015 with some big name films coming our way that are also in the Academy Award running, and with those released on 22nd January have already done well at the recent Golden Globes.

The year ahead is sizing up pretty well so far with lots more on the way. For the immediate future though we have a formidable presence in front of the camera as well as behind it, and for his most recent outing he is sat in the Director's Chair delivering us a very recent true story of one of America's finest war heroes leading a very fractured life because of the actions he has had to undertake on behalf of  his country. On the other hand we have an ever increasing Hollywood star on the rise retelling this memoir for the big screen of a long walk to freedom, redemption and rebirth.

When you have seen your movie choice of the week and sat in the relative comfort of silver screen surround sound air conditioning, drop a line in the Comments Box following this or any Post, and share your cinematic experience with our ever growing readership across the world. Enjoy your movie.

AMERICAN SNIPER (Rated MA15+) - Based on the autobiographical book of Chris Kyle (here played by Bradley Cooper) this very recent true story of his life as crack US Army sniper is Directed by  Clint Eastwood. Having first been a US Navy SEAL, following the events of 9/11 he signs up for sniper duty, and in time becomes so expert at his job that he is dubbed 'The Legend' by his colleagues, 'The Devil of Ramadi' by his enemy and sees out four tours in Iraq taking out a confirmed 160 kills of gun toting, bomb carrying, suicide fuelled men, women and child insurgents. Eastwood has a deft touch for such home-spun character heroes whose everyday lives are fuelled by violence, anxiety, tragedy and loss in some way, that he delivers drama and thrills without being over dramatic and keeping to the heart of the story. American Sniper appears to be no exception, and with it both he and Cooper have delivered quite possibly one of Eastwood's best films in more recent years, and, possibly of the best of the War in Iraq movie offerings that we have yet seen.

But, for every such hero there is a flip side? What happens when our hero goes home at night to an empty house and lies awake all night pondering the outcomes of the day? What happens when close family members have to be confronted with the harsh realities of 'the day job', and what happens when your very existence begins to fall apart because of what you do for that 'day job' and those confirmed kills, living on the edge, and not knowing if today will be your last? Starring Sienna Miller as tough as nails wife Taya, we see the impact all of this has on Kyle's life and his emotional state, we see the gun battles in Iraq, those confirmed kills and his own obsession with taking out 'The Butcher' - a high-level insurgent official. Gripping stuff, expertly delivered on all fronts and all the more real for being seen on our TV screens and newspaper pages in recent years and still today. With a nomination for Best Picture and a nomination for Best Actor for Bradley Cooper at the upcoming Oscar's this is one to watch!

WILD (Rated MA15+) - when Reese Witherspoon kept being handed nondescript parts for female actors, and after lobbying several studios for lead roles in upcoming movies that required a female lead, and getting diddly squat, the Queen of Hollywood took her destiny into her own hands. Having created her own production house - Pacific Standard - she set about convincing Nick Hornby to write the screenplay based on the Cheryl Strayed memoir - whom Witherspoon portrays in this film. So as both Producer and Actor, she had Jean-Marc Vallee Direct - he of 'Dallas Buyers Club' fame, who put this Actress through the rigours and torment of playing a troubled character on a journey (both physical and emotional) of discovery and reawakening - much like McConaughey in the aforementioned Oscar winning 'DBC'. Here we see the 20something Strayed embarking on a self-imposed trek of 1,770kms along the 'Pacific Crest Trail' carrying a 27kgs back pack with everything necessary for her survival supposedly. Running along the Pacific coast from the US border with Mexico in the south to the US border with Canada in the north Strayed makes the decision to hike the route to escape her empty life of grief, addiction, desolation and loneliness in the hope of discovering herself, overcoming her own life's adversities, and battling her inner Demons along the way to redemption and inner peace. Of course along the way too she is largely unprepared for both the emotional and physical challenges that Mother Nature will throw at her, and she does, in spades, and often! 'Wild' and Witherspoon is creating Oscar buzz with a Best Actress nominations for Witherspoon and a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Laura Dern - go see for it for yourself to see what the fuss is all about!

Two hot new films to whet the appetite in the week ahead and creating a little buzz around Oscar time. When you have checked out either, or both, of these films, or any of those others doing the rounds and as Reviewed or Previewed in previous weeks, share your thoughts with your like minded friends here at Odeon Online - it's always good to get another opinion!

The Odeon Online Top 20 movies coming your way in 2015.

2015 is going to be BIG at the movies in what is shaping up to be a year of sequels, reboots, Sci-Fi, dystopian worlds and several epic adventures set to hit our big screens that may well topple the US$1B Box Office mark as their predecessors have done before them. Along the way there are a few crime capers, real life stories, Westerns, comedies, thrillers and chillers and animated features that are all likely to tease and please as we wait in eager anticipation for 12 months of strong cinematic content that has already kicked off and has hit the ground running.

Take your pick of any of these movies, and the whole raft of others that will roll out as 2015 progresses - this year, see as many as you can!
January 1st : 'THE IMITATION GAME' - Benedict Cumberbatch never better in this WWII Enigma Code breaking drama of Alan Turing who led the team that helped save the lives of millions and bring the war to a premature end. Already reviewed and awarded five claps by this Blog. Oscar worthy stuff!
January 15th : 'BIRDMAN' - Michael Keaton in a career best as the retired film Superhero trying to reignite his former fame and fortune through a Broadway play. Directed by Alejandro Inarritu and starring Edward Norton, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts this is already gaining all the buzz as one of the best movies in a very long time featuring outstanding performances, a great story and some nifty camerawork. Oscar worthy stuff also!
January 22nd : 'AMERICAN SNIPER' - Clint Eastwood Directs Bradley Cooper in this true story of crack shot US Army sniper Chris Kyle and his four tours of duty in Iraq in which he had 160 confirmed kills, and, the impact this has on his life and those close to him. Oscar worthy stuff too!
January 29th : 'FOXCATCHER' - starring Steve Carell playing it straight with Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo this is a story of Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz and his brother David hired by billionaire businessman John du Pont (Carell) to lead his own wrestling team to success whilst training from his adapted farm  - the 'Foxcatcher Estate' of the title in readiness for the 1988 Seoul Olympics . . . but this comes at a price to all involved! Oscar worthy stuff again!
January 29th : 'THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING' - Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking from his days studying for his Doctorate at Cambridge through his diagnosis with MND, his marriage to Jane Wilde (his first wife) and his life beyond all expectations confined to a wheelchair but nonetheless still sharp, brilliant and engaging. Oscar worthy stuff once more!
February 12th : 'FIFTY SHADES OF GREY' - this hugely successful best selling book (70 million copies sold) makes it to the big screen and is likely to do well because of it, and it's erotic content which has been toned down to get it to the screen. Starring Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele.
February 19th : 'JUPITER ASCENDING' - the Wachowski's are back in full Sci-Fi mode after their earlier mega-successful 'Matrix' franchise with a down at heel human chick Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) set to inherit the Cosmos with the help of intergalactic man hunter Caine (Channing Tatum) - but needless to say it won't be as simple as it sounds as other interplanetary bad guys have their own designs on what should be going down when the time comes. Also starring Eddie Redmayne, and Sean Bean.
March 19th : 'INSURGENT' - the second outing in this series rolling hot on the heels of last years 'Divergent', sees the same characters reunited as Tris (Shailene Woodley) is on the run with Four (Theo James) trying to find her now divided comrades and the reasons behind the death of her parents, their own history and what they were protecting.
March 19th : 'IN THE HEART OF THE SEA' - Ron Howard Directs Chris Hemsworth in this true story of the incidents that inspired the classic story 'Moby Dick'. Set in 1820 the 'Essex' whaling ship was pressed by a whale of such huge and revengeful proportions that it pushed the crew to their absolute limited as they struggle to survive out at sea for 90 days. Brendon Gleeson, Cillian Murphy and Ben Wishaw also star.

April 23rd : 'THE AVENGERS : AGE OF ULTRON' - the first of several films from the Marvel stable this year ('Ant Man' out on July 17th and 'The Fantastic Four' out on August 7th) and you know this is just going to be massive! Writer/Director Joss Whedon is back reuniting Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Nick Fury against intelligent robot Ultron (James Spader) who is hell bent on world domination, and more thank likely, beyond! It's going to be epic in every sense!
May 14th : 'MAD MAX : FURY ROAD' - the fourth instalment in this franchise helmed by George Miller and shot in Namibia has taken a very long time to get to the big screen after several earlier failed attempts. Tom Hardy is Max Rockatansky starring with Charlize Theron as Furiosa, and following the events of 'Beyond Thunderdome' sees the last vestiges of the human race fighting it out with each other over the necessities of life in a parched desert landscape.

May 21st : 'TOMORROWLAND' - based on another Disney theme park attraction (think 'Pirates of the Carribbean') this futuristic Sci-Fi offering is Directed by Brad Bird and stars Britt Robertson as Casey Newton, a gifted teenager thrown together with George Clooney as Frank Walker an ageing cantankerous inventor as they embark on a journey to locate a place in time and space that only exists in their memory . . . or so they think, and, what will the consequences be when and if they get there?
June 12th : 'JURASSIC WORLD' - twenty or so years have past since 'Jursassic Park' went haywire and all manner of ancient beasts were let loose on an unsuspecting world. Now 'Jurassic World' is updated, renewed and ready to throw open it's gates as John Hammond had originally intended in the initial film(s). Directed by Colin Trevorrow with Chris Pratt in the lead role as a staffer researching a Velociraptor whilst at the same time those pesky scientists have created a new kind of dinosaur in the lab . . . it's not gonna end well methinks for the staffers, the tourists, the owners and probably this poor little dinosaurs!

July 1st : 'TERMINATOR : GENISYS' - just to see Arnie utter those immortal words 'I'll be back!' will be worth the price of a ticket alone. This is the fifth film in the franchise and this reboot is the first of a planned trilogy. Arnie is back doing what he does best and we are back to those characters we know from before - Sarah Connor, John Connor, Kyle Reece, the T-800 and T-1000 and, The Terminator. The shorts are reminiscent of T2, and this has to be another must see for your film diary.
August 13th : 'THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E' - Guy Ritchie Directs this retelling of the classic 60's TV spy series, set also in the 60's with the backdrop of the Cold War and two opposing sides having to join forces against an evil enemy playing with nuclear weapons and technology. Starring Hugh Grant as Waverly, Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer as Ilya Kuryakin we know that Ritchie has the pedigree from the recent 'Sherlock Holmes' movies to deliver.

November 13th : 'THE HATEFUL EIGHT' - Quentin Tarantino back in full Western mode with a story of eight red-neck travellers holed up together taking refuge from a blizzard. As the storm takes hold out travellers are stranded in a old shop on a mountainside, and gradually they come to realise they may not make it to their ultimate destination. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Kurt Russell, Channing Tatum and Jennifer Jason Leigh this is sure to please as only QT can!

November 19th : 'THE HUNGER GAMES : MOCKINGJAY Part 2' - after a lacklustre Part 1 (for me anyway) this had better pull out all the stops and deliver us a grand finale that is a fitting closure to what has gone before. You know the story, you know what is coming and you know what is needed - let's hope we are not disappointed!
November 19th : 'SPECTRE' (aka Bond 24) - Bond, James Bond is back! After the hugely successful 'Skyfall' Daniel Craig is back as our titular MI6 spy hero with Director Sam Mendes and Ralph Fiennes as 'M', Ben Wishaw as 'Q' and Christophe Waltz as enemy #1 Oberhauser. Bond is tracking down the sinister 'Spectre' organisation from his past that potentially could destroy everything he has fought to protect. Any sign of Blofeld, and his cat, anyone?

December 17th : 'STAR WARS : THE FORCE AWAKENS' - if you haven't seen the recently released trailer for this then you have been caught napping methinks! J.J. Abrams is on Director duty for Episode VII that sees us 35 years into the future after 'Return of the Jedi' with many of that former cast reunited with new players for this next instalment. You can expect C3PO, R2D2, the Millennium Falcon, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Chewbacca and heaps of new great stuff! Roll the opening credits!
December 26th : 'MISSION : IMPOSSIBLE 5' - plot details at this point are just about non existent! What we do know is that filming is currently drawing to a close having begun in Vienna about four months ago and this next instalment is Directed by Christopher McQuarrie and stars once again Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Jeremy Renner as William Brandt, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickel, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn with Alec Baldwin heading up the CIA this time around. Light that touch paper!

Wow - that's a big year, and there is so much more to look out for too including - 'Unbroken', 'Poltergeist'(remake), Point Break'(remake), 'The Gambler'(remake), 'The Gunman', 'Black Sea', 'Black Mass', 'The Kingsmen', 'Ted 2', 'The Riot Club', 'The Second Best Marigold Hotel', 'Ex Machina', 'Chappie', 'Pan', 'Cinderella', 'Mordecai' and 'The Martian' plus a host of animated features too amongst others.

Bradley Charles Cooper was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and grew up close by in Jenkintown. His mother Gloria Campano worked for an affiliate of the NBC, and father Charles Cooper was a stockbroker with Merrill Lynch - he passed away early in 2011. He attended the Germantown Academy from which he graduated in 1993, and then went onto Villanova University for a year and then Georgetown University at which he gained a BA honours degree in English in 1997. He learned to speak French fluently and spent six months in France as an exchange student. In 2000, he received a Master of Fine Arts at the now named Actors Studio Drama School at New York's Pace University.

Cooper's professional acting career kicked off in 1999 with a guest appearance on 'Sex and the City', and the he worked as a Presenter on the travel adventure show 'Globe Trekker' (aka 'Pilot Guides' and 'Lonely Planet'). His first film role came with a 'Wet Hot American Summer' with the likes of Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks and Amy Poehler and was both a critical and commercial failure. From here he gained a regular slot as character Will Tippin on the successful 'Alias' television action drama series alongside Jennifer Garner. He gained a small role in 2002's 'Changing Lanes' with Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson but his performance appears only on the DVD and Bluray versions of the film. 2002 also brought the films 'My Little Eye' and 'Bending all the Rules' with numerous television roles and guest appearances that included 'The $treet', 'Miss Match', 'Touching Evil', 'Jack and Bobby', 'Kitchen Confidential' and 'Nip/Tuck'.

After a couple of made for TV movies, he starred in 2005's 'Wedding Crashers' with Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughan and Christopher Walken, following this up with RomCom 'Failure to Launch' with Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker. What followed were mostly typecast comedies all with varying levels of acclaim including 'The Comebacks', 'The Rocker', 'Yes Man', 'He's Just Not That Into You' interspersed with occasional dramatic roles in horror thriller 'The Midnight Meat Train' and suspense drama 'Older than America'.

2009 proved to be a turning point with the first in the hugely successful 'The Hangover' series which all up generated US$1.4B in Box Office receipts and DVD/Bluray sales off a total production budget of US$218M, and spawned two sequels in 2011 and 2013. Cooper earned US$600K for the first instalment, US$5M for the second and US$15M for the third. That same year saw 'All About Steve' with Sandra Bullock, 'New York, I Love You' and psychological horror 'Case 39' closing out the year.

2010 saw the big screen reboot of the popular 80's action adventure television series 'The A-Team' with Cooper playing 'Face' alongside Liam Neeson and Patrick Wilson. 'Limitless' came next with Robert De Niro and Abbie Cornish in a positively received film that was certainly successful commercially and generally critically too. After this the second 'Hangover' offering gave way to 'Hit and Run' followed up by the much acclaimed 'Silver Linings Play Book' with Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro for which Cooper received Lead Actor nominations at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes and the BAFTA's.

Romantic drama 'The Words' followed in 2012 with Zoe Saldana and Jeremy Irons and 2013 saw 'The Place Beyond the Pines' with Ryan Gosling, the third 'Hangover' with the now all too familiar cast and plot lines, and concluding the year 'American Hustle' with Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence again, and, for which he received nominations in the Best Supporting Actor category at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes and the BAFTA's.

Next up was his voice adaptation as 'Rocket' the Racoon in Marvel's sleeper hit 'Guardians of the Galaxy' which has so far earned a largely unexpected US$773M, followed by another turn alongside Jennifer Lawrence in the recently released 'Serena'. Coming up in 2015 is Cooper's lead role in the anticipated Clint Eastwood Directed 'American Sniper' due imminently , 'Joy' currently in pre-production seeing him reunited again with co-stars Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro and Directed by David O'Russell (who Directed him in the acclaimed 'Silver Linings Play Book' and 'American Hustle') and two as yet untitled projects for Cameron Crowe and John Wells due later in 2015.

Cooper has 49 acting credits to his name and five Producer credits so far, he has 20 award wins and 49 other nominations. He was married for a brief time to actress Jennifer Esposito from 2006-2007 and has been romantically linked to Actresses Renee Zellweger and Zoe Saldana and most recently to model Suki Waterhouse. He gave up alcohol at the age of 29, is a dog lover and a keen cook and likes to eat (a lot as he says) - and with Italian heritage he grew up making fresh homemade pastas, sauces and concocting dishes out of whatever he has lying around.

Bradley Cooper - definitely on the up & up, known for a cheeky grin, piercing blue eyes, trademark five day growth of stubble, and more recently playing more dramatic characters that stretch, challenge and ultimately reward us all - Happy 40th Birthday to you from Odeon Online.

Clinton Eastwood Jnr. was born in San Francisco, and in the early 50's before his acting career took hold he was a lifeguard and swimming coach in the US Army. Subsequently, as we all know, he has gone on to become a movie legend both in front and behind the camera. He has always tried to maintain a private life away from the media, and in some ways this has been surprising given the eight children he has fathered to six different women over the years - two of whom only he has been married to. Aside form his Acting and Directing credits (of which there are many) he has always had staunch political views and has been an avid supporter (or not) of past Presidents and their running mates. For a period of two years he was the Mayor of Carmel from 1986 on, and his political activism has crossed over many administrations, many campaigns and many changes over the past five decades or so.
As an Actor he has been making films since the mid-50's - putting him now still very active at making films in his seventh decade and at age 84. Not only does he have 66 Acting credits to his name, but also 37 Directing credits, 40 Production credits and another 32 for the soundtrack and music composition. Truly accomplished, he has garnered a reputation as a fastidious film maker, organised and disciplined often bringing his movies in ahead of time and under budget.

His first film credit came in 1955 in 'Revenge of the Creature' with 'Tarantula' out that same year. It was however, his role as Rowdy Yates in TV's long running 'Rawhide' from 1959-1965 that bought Eastwood international fame and recognition. Wanting to break the mould of Rowdy Yates as the mid-60's approached he was signed up for the first of Sergio Leone's 'Dollars' trilogy in 1964 with 'For a Fistful of Dollars', followed by 'For a Few Dollars More' in 1965 and then 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' in 1967, and it was these three Spaghetti Westerns that really put Eastwood under the international movie spotlight.

Following on from these, Eastwood carved out an acting career playing the anti-hero cowboy in such films as 'The Outlaw Josey Wales', 'High Plains Drifter', 'Paint Your Wagon' 'Pale Rider' 'Hang 'Em High' and 'Unforgiven'. There were also stints at the war action film with the likes of 'Kelly's Heroes', 'Where Eagles Dare' and 'Heartbreak Ridge', and of course those trademark Police action movies that will forever be etched in the psyche as Harry Callahan in five 'Dirty Harry' instalments - 'Dirty Harry', 'Magnum Force', The Enforcer', 'Sudden Impact', and 'The Dead Pool'. So too he has dabbled in comedy with 'Every Which Way But Loose' and it's follow up 'Any Which Way You Can' being very successful too.

He has an equally diverse Directing career from his first outing behind the camera in 1971 in the cult thriller 'Play Misty for Me' to the likes of 'White Hunter, Black Heart' 'A Perfect World', 'Invictus', 'Mystic River', Gran Torino', 'J.Edgar' and the 'Flags of our Fathers' and 'Letters from Iwo Jima' coupling. His 'Jersey Boys' is due for release later in 2014, and he is currently filming 'American Sniper' due for release in 2015.

The recipient of 140 award wins and a further 92 nominations, Eastwood has won five Oscar's - Best Picture and Best Directing for 'Million Dollar Baby', Best Picture and Best Directing also for 'Unforgiven' and in 1995 the Academy bestowed upon him the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. He has also been nominated six other times by the Academy for either Acting, Directing, or Best Picture. He has five Golden Globes to his name - three for Best Director, and in 1988 the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and in 1971 The Henrietta Award, and nine other nominations for both Direction or Score. He has three BAFTA nominations too for Best Direction and Best Film.

Clint Eastwood - hugely successful, multi-talented, reliable, responsible, still relevant and the proud owner of two of Hollywoods greatest icon's - 'The Man With No Name' and 'Harry Callahan' - Clint Eastwood still has the pulling power to draw a crowd to the cinema, and attract the A-list talent with which to make his films. A long, varied and distinguished career still in the making - Happy Birthday Clint, from all at Odeon Online.
