What's new in Odeon's this week - Thursday 12th June 2014

This week we have another diverse offering of films to tempt you out to your local cinema on a cold Winter's evening into the warmth of a movie theatre for a visual, aural and emotional treat. Four films that will make you laugh, make you cry, make you think and maybe make you tap your toes as you sit in a darkened room for two hours and get carried away to someplace else! Enjoy the experience whatever you see, and maybe, let our readership know what you think.

THE ROVER (Rated MA15+) - An Australian film from Director David Michod who brought us the excellent 'Animal Kingdom' in 2010. Starring at its lead Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, this film tells the story set in the near future about ten years after 'The Collapse' when the world economy has all but collapsed and society as we once knew it has broken down into a largely lawless dystopian landscape. That said, Australia has fared better than most on the strength of our natural resources, but as a result there has been a flood of immigrants from the world over looking to eek out a meagre existence in our sun drenched land, and not always within the realms of the law (or what still exists of it!). Our story centres around Eric (Pearce) travelling the outback and he is set upon by a band of four guys who steal his car . . . and he wants it back! Along the way he is able to capture Rey (Pattinson) who has become wounded and Eric uses him to track down the remaining three and retrieve his vehicle. Remembering this is a lawless society now with the backdrop of the desolate isolated outback where there are no rules and only the fittest survive - this film is likely to be confronting, harsh, brutal and haunting. Described as a very solid and satisfying follow up to 'Animal Kingdom'.

GOOD VIBRATIONS (Rated MA15+) - this is the retelling of a true story of Rock 'n' Roll one hit wonder legend Terri Hooley, who amongst other things for a very brief period was the frontman for Irish teen pop band 'The Undertones' whose #1 song 'Teenage Kicks' was massive at the time and remains a classic of the era to this day. Set in and around Belfast Terri Hooley also opened a record store, aptly named 'Good Vibrations' which allowed him to channel his love for music whilst being the city's distraction to all the sectarian violence that was so prevalent at the time, and, an outlet for the youth growing up amongst it. Richard Dormer plays Terri Hooley with Irish charm, wit and the local smarts to make a difference within his community at least, and in turn give something back.

BLENDED (Rated PG) - Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are back at it again in their Nth on-screen collaboration playing the same hapless love lorn displaced mismatched couple they did in their last outing, and the one before, and the one before it, and . . . ! Playing single parents who meet on a disastrous blind date they part company agreeing never to see each other again! Separately they book family holidays to some fabulous African safari resort, and lo & behold rock up to said resort together, and to make matters worse have to share a suite! This will be predictable fanciful formulaic fairy-floss that is sure to send you to sleep!

THE FACE OF LOVE (Rated M) - five years after losing the love of her life Nikki (Annette Benning) meets Tom (Ed Harris) and that encounter changes her life forever. Falling hopelessly in love Tom ticks all the right boxes - smart, clever, attractive, kind, gentle and adventurous . . . and a spitting image of her deceased husband Garrett. As their love for each other deepens Nikki must confront Tom and reveal the object of her true affection - is it the fantasy of rekindling the past and the memory of Garrett, or is it the reality of a life with Tom. Also starring Robin Williams this is likely to appeal to a more mature audience, and it's good to see three such heavy hitters on the screen together.

Four very different film offerings again, and once more almost something for everyone. Get out there and see a movie and give me your feedback . . . alway welcome!
